Default What is a CV?

Trying to get job interviews in NZ.

They keep saying to send your CV with letters of reference. Is a CV the same as an American resume? If not, then what changes does my husband need to make to his American resume in order to make it a proper "CV?"

Also, will school principals (or anybody for that matter) do a video interview through Skype? Maybe that depends on whether they have/know how to use Skype. Maybe that also depends on whether their computer has one of those little videocameras on it.

Can we really rely on the possibility of having a job once we get there, based on an overseas interview, when we can't interview in person?

A CV is a curriculum vitae (not sure of the spelling on that). It's very similar to an American resumé, though most places where it is used, it's a bit more detailed. And, of course, each country or region has their own preferences for formatting and all.

For most sorts of jobs, you can usually send a US format resumé. Just make sure it has all the required information, or that you include the extra bits in your cover letter. A few details normally included on CVs include: nationality, date of birth and "family status" (i.e. single, married, etc.) and some indication of at least the major training courses completed since starting work. Job descriptions tend to be a bit more "factual" (as in the old line, "just the facts, ma'am) and a little less marketing hype than is usual in the US, but I think most English speaking countries make allowances for this anyhow.

You may be able to get a format for a NZ format CV on a job hunting site for NZ.

I wouldn't count on doing interviews via Skype - for a variety of reasons, including the potential for fraud. If you do get some positive response, it might be a good idea to schedule a quick trip to NZ for a couple of weeks to make yourself available for live interviews. (It's expensive, I know, but it certainly demonstrates your seriousness - and overcomes one objection to considering a foreigner.)

You might also want to note in your cover letter what your situation is regarding your move to NZ. Potential employers often assume they will have to pay for moving costs. If you're prepared to pay your own way, or at least a good part of your move, you should mention that in the cover letter. Again, it knocks down one more objection to hiring a foreigner.
Cheers,
Bev
