What a terrible thing to happen here in Cyprus. My thoughts are with everyone concerned, especially the dead, injured and homeless people caught up in the tragedy.

Yes its a real tragedy
I can't for the life of me understand how all this explosive material was stored in such a way that this could happen. It should have been in a purpose built compound for explosives, not just in the open on a naval base.
My son who is an ex RAF explosives expert is appalled at the total lack of saftey.
This could well affect the electricity supplies for some time if the power station is not back online soon as the two smaller power stations will not be able to cope with the demand for long.

As an ex-H&S manager in the UK, that was my first thought, but there is a general lack of health and safety here I have noticed over the years of visiting, you only have to look at the building sites.

This has wiped out a whole village. I suspect, like you say, this will have far reaching consequences for the whole island.

My son is also a health and safety officer now and I sometimes think that this island needs a whole gang of H&S officers to sort out the lack of any regualtions at all. We are in the EU and as such should be following EU safety directives but of course Cyprus has no intention of complying with any EU laws if it can help it.

I think trying to implement H&S in Cyprus and then comes the bigger job of policing it, sounds like the job from HELL, where would you start?

I don't think the island realises the amount regulations that are in place in the EU and will flount them for as long as possible, but like most things, Big Brother will catch you in the end.

I've found this website quite good for all links as to what happened and what is happening. Keeps the information collated in one place.

According to Sigma there are 20 containers at Larnaca Airport which were confiscated on their way to or from Afghanistan.
If they go up the tragedy will be far, far worse with the large numbers of people thatuse the airport.
Are the polititions in this country people complete morons?

The Cyprus Mail online has a lot of articles about different aspects of the disaster.

Cyprus Mail – Cyprus’ Leading Daily Newspaper

Some interesting stuff which shows just how incompetent the president is and strongly pointing to his culpability.

I read that snippet on a web site, just as my Cypriot neighbours and their two young children were leaving for Larnaca airport to fly to Greece.

The catastrophe happened Monday and it's now Wednesday and the containers are still at the airport.

Crazy.
