Home Schooling

Greetings,

Are there any secular home schooling groups in Mexico City? I knew before coming down that home schooling isn't the preferred method of education, but I've got my reasons, so...

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to connect with other families who are homeschooling.

I did a Google search for " Mexico City, home schooling" and found several web sites that offered secular home schooling in Mexico City. BTW, your forum posting re home schooling also came up on my search!

I'm using materials from a private school in Vermont. I don't know how long we're going to be in Mexico, and he already lost a year in the US system while studying at a British school for two years (he should be in fifth grade, but he's in fourth...no big deal, his b-day's in October, so he's always been one of the youngest in his class), so I want him to stick with a US curriculum.

But Synthia, you mentioned (in another thread) that sending him to public school part-time would help him with his Spanish, so I'm definately going to look into that.

Per Synthia's post, sending your son to Mexican public school part-time would certainly aid in his acquisition of the Spanish language. From your posting, I presume that your son is about 10 years old and has had some expose to Public schooling? Should that not be the situation, it would certainly help in his cultural absorption. You didn't mention if your son has any Spanish proficiency? Should you stay in Mexico for only a short period of time, your son's experience in Spanish Public School is an experience that he will be able to build upon in the future.

I do agree with you that he shouldn't get another year behind. I'm surprised that he lost a year, however. When immigrant children come to the US they are popped into whatever grade is age appropriate.
