Default Child Care / Baby Sitters

Greetings,

Where do you go to find a baby sitter in Mexico City? I've already learned that family and live-in nannies are the way locals usually do it, but I don't have family here, and I don't need live-in help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
K.

You might want to start with the American Embassy; they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Babysitting is kind of a foreign concept here in France, too. One solution for many folks has been to check expat clubs and groups. Often the teenaged sons and daughters of other Americans living in the area are anxious to pick up a bit of pocket change by babysitting.

We have a French "welcome club" here in the area, and some of the French teenagers have learned about babysitting from the foreigners in the club. Find a neighbor family who has teenaged kids and see what you can work out.

In any place where live-in servants are common, babysitters will probably be scarce. You may not need a housekeeper or maid, but it might be a lot more convenient to have one.

Thanks for the responses!

We're renting rooms from a family who only has someone come in and clean once a week. She was recently let go on account of her work ethic, so I wouldn't feel comfortable tracking her down or asking her for a referral (which is how I did it when we were in the Gulf).

I was in communication with someone I found on craigslist.org; but I haven't heard back from her since asking for references.

Oh well, something'll come up, right? I mean, we just got here and there's always that initial, settling in period.

Thanks again,
K.

Please be very wary of craigslist.com! There have been several recent stories in the news about bogus and fabricated entries and referrals! Personally, I would not trust any information gleaned from the Internet concerning personal recommendations and/or referrals, especially where the safety of my children are concerned! In my opinion, I would stay with physically verifiable caretakers!
