Default Mexican Auto Insurance

I am driving to Mexico and will be there for 2 months. What is the best company to buy from, both economically and reliability? Is it best to buy in advance over the internet or at the boarder? I will be crossing at Nogales. thank you for any recommendations you can offer.

At the border, or just before, you will find offices selling automobile insurance for Mexico. The most popular one for ease of use and probably the most visible on is Sanborn's. You may use Google to find any number of other companies offering Mexican policies. As you know, you must have separate insurance for Mexico, issued by a Mexican underwriter. You may also find that a six month policy will cost as much as two months, if a shorter term is even available. You'll have to shop around to find the best combination of price, terms and coverage. Be sure to get road service and the 'get out of jail' legal coverage.

Thank you for the reply. I know of Sanborns but have also heard that there is a range of prices and reliability from company to company....I thought maybe someone knew the "best" company, maybe to get online before my trip, to save me the trouble of shopping around....thanks again.

If you were coming to our area, I might recommend a few of the local agents. However, you didn't specify your destination or if it is a road trip.

Perhaps there is someone on the forum who knows of a good agent in Nayarit who might give you a quote; or even one north of the Nogales crossing that they can recommend.
Chime in if you are out there.
Note: If you are an agent, please contact the OP privately; not on the forum.

I use San Xavier Insurance along with a number of friends and yes you can get it online. Should be able to get estimates online from all companies. Don't bother going by what the car is worth to you ... simply Blue Book.

Most gringos don't have problems so there are seldom horror stories ... or any stories of the actual service. The few I've heard depend totally on the situation. The horror stories usually involve commercial vehicles because the companies have their insurance issues down to a science

San Xavier Insurance - Bob Acosta - has an office in Nogales just after you exit I-19 at the Mariposa Truck Route - look for his sign on the hill between a hotel and a hamburger place (Carl's Jr. I think) - you will get good service and good pricing. As Sparks says, you can buy on line if that is quicker and easier for you.

What I use down here in D.F. wouldn't apply, but wanted to add some information on insurance and situations down here and foreigners.

From my experience, the foreigners who I have known get into accidents deal only with the insurance companies, not the police here in the metro area. An accident occurs and both people call up there insurance company and they come out to the scene and it's settled there. Only if one of the people doesn't have insurance is there a problem. I have known that police will sometimes stop by a scene, but once they see both parties have insurance, they move on. They most certainly do have it down to a science.
