Queretaro reads like a great colonial city. Good weather, airport, close to San Miguel for day trip. I wonder why it gets so little attention in expat discussions. I'm looking for alternatives to San Miguel in the same area. Guanajuato is being strongly considered.....so...Why not Queretaro???

Probably because, like Guanajuato, there are few gringos there.

Good. I know it probably won't stay that way but could be a great place to expat. We will go there and Guanajuato in January.

Queretaro is a horrible estado, does not cater to foreigners, higher taxes than most states in Mexico, run by the old political families... alot of Mexicans from Mexico City have been moving there the past few years driving up housing prices - totally unwarranted.

I lived there 5 years, got tired of fighting the bureaucracy, the only semi-expat communities are halfway between the city of Queretaro and San Miguel de Allende (Jurica and Juriquilla) the are way overpriced and in a really horrible area - San Miguel is 100 times more beautiful and interesting.

The only city of any quality in all of Queretaro is beautiful Tequisquiapan, a quiet pueblo, alot of European visitors, close to the best opal mines in Mexico - the only problem is that it is way overpriced - wireless internet, Costco, Cinemas, etc. expected in the next year or two.

We are now living happily in Colima - yes we have an active volcano, earth temblers, but the state of Colima is rated the highest quality of life in all of Mexico. The port city of Manzanillo is growing and this year an influx of foreigners is arriving daily - soon our casas will be going up in price, but for now everything is still affordable... and Guadalajara is less than 2 hours away!
