Default Mexican Food

Is the food in Mexico similar to the Mexican food sold in the U.S. at such places as Taco Bell? If not, what is it like?

When I was in Mexico I mostly ate my cousin's cooking. She lived there and we stayed at her house. She was Mexican though, and her cooking was very similar to what you'd get in a really good Mexican sit-down restaurant. Not really like the fast food places though.

I think we only went out to eat once. The menu looked, again, like a good Mexican restaurant in the U.S., but with various international items as well.

That funny because I've not found the food in Mexico anything like the US. Not that I don't like some NOB latin American food ... it's just not similar

Could be it's like Italy, with different cuisines in different regions. I was in the area south of California, with side trips east (south of Arizona). Which areas have you been to?

Definitely regional differences. Areas I haven't been are along the Gulf and Chiapas. I live on the west coast of Jalisco near Colima

The last few times I've been in Mexico, I really noticed how much a simple thing, like a quesadilla, varied, not just from region to region but from town to town.

Default Food of the Yucatan

There are definitely regional differences in the cooking of Mexico! Here in the state of Yucatan, we've been influenced by Mayans, Lebanese, Europeans, Caribbeans, and the rest of Mexico. This has created a truly unqiue style of cooking - whether Mayan barbeque, kibbehs, or tacos, there's a lot to be tried.

My only experience with Mexican food. other than Chichis and other Mexican style US restaurants, was in Tijuana when I was driving truck for United Van Lines, Household Goods Division back in the 70's and 80's. Taco Bell is NOT Mexican food; I don't know what it is, but I do not eat it! I recall that the food in Tijuana was kind of Americanized, being so close to the border, but it was basic Mexican food; mostly spicy and hot! I would get a 1 gallon jar of mixed peppers to keep in the truck; those were the days when my stomach could tolerate jabineros and jalapeņos peppers; those days are gone!

Default Mexican Food

We just returned from the Lakeside area in Mexico. My husband enjoyed the food much more than I did.

I found the steaks tough and tasteless. Chicken far over cooked ( to a dried crisp). Far too much onion and cilantro in everything. Pastas not cooked in salt, leaving it tasteless. Hamburgers seem to all be prepared with some type filler. Even club sandwiches ruined with jalapeno mayonaise, that was not mentioned in the menu.

If it were not for the desserts, I would have lost weight. Love that Flan, egg custards and Pan Dulce!!!!!!!!!

I still had a great time.
