Hi, we are moving from Orange County California to Rome next month. I have been quoted almost $18,000 for a 40ft container door to door everything included from Schumacher cargo company. Which company do you recommend or not and is this a good quote or should I shop around? Thanks so much!

Hi David, you don't know me but I follow your informative blog and comments on the forum. I have a question if you have the time. I am still planning my eventual move back to France and of course, like you and June, I would like to take some electronic things with me that may not be practical. I have gone to the excellent site you mentioned - World Imports and I think that I will get a DVD player there rather than bringing mine. However, I have some small electrical items that have importance to me. One is a Tivoli brand radio and the other is a pair of brass lamps. I know that I can buy these things there but I think that you can understand that it is not the same. I am not bringing much, just a few boxes and artwork so I expect my move will cost more proportionally and that is okay. My question, can the Tivoli stand the difference and should I get a separate type of transformer for it? Can I just use converter plugs for the lamps? Thanks

Been following your progress with much interest and envy and just wondered how the translator is organised. Did you arrange for one or the notaire? jill

    Hi Caroline

Our sewing machine came from the UK and we run it here in the US on a 220v 60Hz outlet - works just as well using a transformer. Yours I believe is a US 110v 60Hz machine and given a suitable transformer it will work in France, you might notice is runs a tas slower but that's all. Same with the toaster - just need a suitable transformer to raise the voltage to 220v.

When I say transformer I mean a real transformer, not those little converters in travel packs. You should look at the www dot world-import dot com site - I have bought many things from them over the years

Hi. You seem to know a lot about electronics, so I wanted to ask your advice. I read the threads about what to ship/not ship, and you said you've had no problems with your sewing machine. That was great news, since mine is almost brand new! I was wondering about a toaster over...mine has two toast slots included, which is a great space saver, so I'd like to bring it. Do you think it would be okay? Thanks so much! Caroline
