Default How is everyone doing in the COLD!?

We were down to -10 the other morning. Today it was a balmy -8 when we got up.

The wood stove is doing an admirable job of keeping the cold at bay. But the age and condition of our double glazed windows is starting to show. (There's a definite cold draft here in my office as I type this!)

Thanks to the sunshine the last few days, our solar assisted water heater is doing just great. Tomorrow there is snow in the forecast - so we'll have to see how things go from there. (So far the most optimistic forecast says we might break 0 on Thursday.)
Cheers,
Bev

Just read your posting, looked out the window - it's SNOWING !!! here in Chantepie near Rennes. Well they did warn us and Meteo France was right. It has indeed got warmer - only 0°C, just right for snow. Trouble is thatv they've forecast freezing rain for Sunday morning which is a pain. Was planning to go to our monthly classic car meeting tomorrow morning with the Morris - will leave it for another time.

Otherwise coping with the cold, just put another layer on and thicker socks - bought some super thick "laine polaire" in Iceland during my last trip - it wasn't a waste of money.

However if you are in a remote rural area I hope you've got stocked up and have alternative sources of heating.

If it's pretty tomorrow morning will try and post a photo.

Bon courage,
Michael

According to the forecasts, those of you out in Brittany are due for some serious "warming" in the next few days. (Hey, anything above 0 is "warm" to me lately.)

In Ile de France, it's snowing very steadily, but just covering the ground now as it starts to get light outside. (Donkeys are covered in snow - for some reason they prefer standing outside in the snow as it is falling.)
Cheers,
Bev

If you want to feel even colder have a look at the Météo France website for the town where you live. In February 1990 a high of 23.6C was reached in my town. The coldest February temperature on record here was -18C in 1963 - the year we had about 12 weeks of snow in Scotland - a great time to be a boy but probably not appreciated by my parents at the time.

Hi,

So far we have missed the snow, rained overnight though and it's about 1C right now. We only have the oil boiler and it's working overtime burning oil like there's no tomorrow. We are waiting on a contractor to put the chimney liner and fireplace insert in before we can use it.

And after twenty years in Southern California this is a real shock to the system We are wearing clothes we had forgotten we had!

Cheers

We made our usual run (ha!) up to the marché this morning. Hardly anyone out on the roads. A bit of sand put down on some of the worst hills and curves, but little evidence of any attempt to "engage" with the weather conditions.

Most of the merchants just didn't turn up - but there was the poissoniere (who put out a sign in his usual spot directing people to the shop - "heated!") and the butcher whose shop faces directly on the marketplace. The two big greengrocers turned out and were doing business with their stands well enclosed with tarps in heavy plastic to keep in the heat. (In fact, you had to peek in through the curtain covering the entrance to find out who was in there at all.)

Ah, winter comes (at last) to northern France!
Cheers,
Bev

Oh do I remember THAT winter, started snowing on Christmas Eve and didn't seem to quit for weeks. As you say, good memories if you were a teenager.

Cheers

Yes I can remember THAT winter as well !! - was in my late teens in Bristol. Newspaper linings in my wellies to keep feet warm and pyjama trowsers as long underwear under my everyday trowsers as an extra layer to keep warm at the bus stop. We didn't have central heating in my parents house, just one coal fire in the living room with extra heat from the black and white TV when it was on in the evening. At night I kept my clothes warm in bed !!!!

Kids of today don't realise their comforts !!!!!!!!!!!!

Next snow for eastern Brittany is programmed for Tuesday, freezing rain and black ice tomorrow.

Keep warm.
Michael

It has snowed all day here in Toulouse - and it's still coming down! My grandchildren had a great time this afternoon - snowballs, snowmen and sliding down the slope leading to the house. Their parents will have fun too tomorrow morning - trying to get to school and work....
