Default Eating less salt doesn't cut risk of heart disease ...

A European study just published in JAMA shows that people who ate lots of salt were not more likely to get high blood pressure, and were less likely to die of heart disease than those with a low salt intake.

I was always a bit suspicious of low salt diets, especially in hot countries where a shortage of salt can give you muscle cramps. A lot of Spanish food is very salty (often too salty for British tastes), and yet they have a longer life expectancy that the US or the UK!

you've done it again Alcalaina!! I totally agree

We need salt to help to store fluids! What we eat far too much of in the western world is sugar! (but the sugar industry is too powerful to allow that to be common knowledge!)

Ooooh good.... I'm not going to keel over because of the packet of salted peanuts I scoffed last night then!

Aprovéchate!

I'm addicted to salt-toasted almonds, especially with a nice cold glass of fino.

Yet another scientific study to prove that whatever we eat or drink is bad for us……… then it isn’t…….. then it is ……… then some of it isn’t……..and so it goes on.

Take saccharin for instance, a few years ago they (the scientific study peeps) said it was carcinogenic and as a saccharin user that made me take a bit of notice …… until I found out that their theory was based on some poor mouse, that had been force fed a ridiculous amount of the stuff every day, finally died of guess what?.........aye, the big “C”, although I have a theory that it just died of dietary boredom but hey……. it was nice & slim when it croaked.

Remember what went on with eggs? First they were good then they were bad then were good again, then the yolks were dodgy and now…….who knows.

Here’s one for yer (and answer in a few seconds)….is milk good?

I think that unless you’re a wobbly, 20 stone, totally immobile, alcoholic smoker that eats nothing but burgers & chips then worry not…….you can eat and drink what the hell you like as long as you remember the word “moderation”

Doggy

I remember there was a massive scare about aspartame sweetener and it turned out to be an email hoax. But a lot of people still think there's no smoke without fire and avoid it just in case. In fact you'd need to drink about 50 diet cokes a day to exceed the recommended amount.

I think milk is wonderful, but my great-grandparents were dairy farmers so I'm biased. Mind you they both lived to over 90!

As you say, moderation is the thing.

I think we should eat natural foods, instead of all this processed and manufactured junk!

However, I think that the recent scientific studies indicating that dark chocolate is a powerful anti-oxidant with many other health benefits is probably true - or at least it should be! And, quite frankly, I am more than willing to be the guinea pig in any future trials!

Better we rejoice in eating peanuts and ham, since now they are saying that coffee and Sex (sex? Really? ) trigger stroke.

Yes!!! Thats the trouble tho isnt it. All these studies, all sponsored by the companies with the vested interest. They say a glass or two of wine a days good for you too, so maybe I'll be the guinea pig for chocolate and wine (Actually I'm not a great drinker - altho if it helps?????)
