My daughter is busy googling all the places mentioned and is actually quite in love with the idea of becoming a hippy??? dropping out of school, weird music, "peace man" stuff???? She keeps banging on about some "farm" in Fuengirola that was used as a hippy commune - neither of us can find anything on google - but thanks for all the info so far!!!

peace man !

Tell her to google Hippies Ibiza, I'm sure there is loads of stuff there, as it was one of the main colonies, if not the main colony.
In fact they still had a hippy market last time I was there.

There used to be some communes promoting different/alternative lifestyles for sure in the mountains near the French borders, but not sure if any of them are still ongoing. The flower power culture has faded to a very small underground thing, pretty much like the goth subculture has. It survives but on very small scale and often with people being very far off the initial wave (ideologically I mean). Seems to me like punk is the only one to have survived the hands of time.

Hippie culture was good though. The ideals of pacifism, against taboos (eg sexuality), against discrimination and intolerance of any sort, ... In a way this should revive, we need some positive spirits to counter the many negative and sour people!

Never knew Joni Mitchell was associated with hippie culture. One famous band that was very much associated with this, was All About Eve (and they were very good too). "Flowers in our hair" was a great track, as was "Our summer".

Well, from what I've learnt so far by doing "our" project is that the name "hippy" was derived from the fact they wore hipster jeans and the word "hep" which meant "good/cool/fab", someone also said that hippies were considered to hypocrites and the name came from that??????? The movement was a direct result of the austerity measures during the 2nd world war (a time when many hippies were born) and the vietnam war in the US and a rebellion against the establishment (like most things teenagers do nowadays!!) - something that hadnt happened with teenagers before. Hence the long hair, psychedelic colours and "peace man" - parents and the US military was the opposite and they were fiercely opposed to!

To a point it was a beautiful idea, but as time went on, the drug culture, free love and communism that were a large part of "hippidom" created issues that were to bring about its downfall! Altho obviously its legacy has left its mark in society as with most trends.

Thats what we've learnt - in a nutshell. It played its part in creating the society we have today. what my daughter now wants to see is what is life like for those hippies who didnt ever conform - someone commented that they're now old, wrinkly and dazed from overuse of drugs. What are their children like and are there still new hippies who are living the life???!! All of which she's going to be looking into as part of this project! Thats why she would have liked to know if there are any communes nearby to us

Its been an interesting one tho. Thank you for all your help and interest!

Joni lived the "hippy culture" one summer in a place called Matala in Crete, where they lived in caves in the cliff until eventually the army came in and drove them all out. She left before then, though - she liked clean white sheets and other home comforts! The album "Blue" documents it all.

The overall concept was good but a lot of people's heads were irreversibly screwed up by LSD and cannabis. There was also an explosion of sexually transmitted diseases due to an excess of "free love"!

Yeah, far out! That would be groovy.

Yes, that was what we discovered and why the hippy way of life created issues that lead to its demise. Altho like all trends, it has left some permanent legacies and is part of the progression of living

Its an interesting journey. Its part of their history class and they've all been told to choose a period of history that interests them and to do a project - I'm glad she's chosen something like this - I think my son chose the history of transport and motor racing when he did it !

It would be nice to display this "project" on here, but its all being done in a folder and not on a pc.

found this. not sure if its what your daughter is on about.
Forte Ingles Estate

these paragraphs down the bottom of page

Two hundred years ago a farmhouse was built on the borders of Alhaurin and Mijas. Many years later it was expanded into a beautiful and secluded villa by its eccentric and reclusive new owner. At that time the only access from Fuengirola to Alhaurin was by means of a winding dirt track. When he discovered that the track was to be made into a road, he was furious and soon afterwards sold the villa to a restaurateur.

Permission was granted for a grand country inn but unfortunately the company fell on hard times and it had to be sold. The property became overgrown concealing the magnificent villa from the outside world. The derelict house was ransacked, and later taken over by hippies. They lived by selling scrap metal and farming pigs.

Neo-hippies is the term for those who seriously live the hippie lifestyle now. Oddly enough, those minority of hippies who stuck to the lifestyle, are sometimes classified as such too.

I don't think that it was rebellion only against the Vietnam war and against establishment in general. Obviously that was part of it. But also, the early hippie movement was very eco-concerned, pacifist and tolerant in general. So they also stood up against racism, sexism, homophobia, ... They certainly did a great number of things that were positive, such as breaking the taboo on sexuality.

A lot of subcultures lived a short existance, then to continue in a very underground way with only small numbers of followers. I was very much in the goth subculture and in a way still am, but only when we talk about the original wave of goths. The modern-day goths in fact have no clue what it was about and shouldn't be calling themselves goths. I very much disassociate myself with the (often teenagers and early twentiers) folks that crowd the goth clubs nowadays. They got no clue what it was about really.

I fear hippie-ism pretty much suffered the same fate: after a while only the die-hards continued, and many people who now re-discovered the subculture don't really have a proper idea of the ideology that was behind the original subculture when it first developped.

The only subculture that truly survived the hands of time, is punk. The most shortlived one must have been the no-wave one, although the band Swans survived its own movement and continued way beyond the end of the movement.

All About Eve - Flowers in our Hair:
(pity the video is not on YouTube, so it seems. This is just the studio version with a still image. All About Eve were very much about the hippie idealism, although not all of their songs were about that subject. But they were very much treasuring the hippie idealisms. Julianne had one of the most blissful voices of the era and a true natural beauty too )

My native Belgium had a great hippie icon: Ferre Grignard. This was his most famous song:
He very much lived the alternative lifestyle. He came from a more uphill elitist family and disliked the materialist lifestyle a lot, so he just broke with his background and started to live an alternative lifestyle, which he continued to do until his death (he died of cancer)
