Default The good news thread

How about a thread where we give good news about Spain and what's happening here in an effort to counter balance the black clouds of unemployment, rising costs and God forbid DOG POO!!!

To start the ball rolling...

  • As I mentioned in another thread, the number of tourists in Madrid beat all records last year, so that's one area of tourism that's doing well.
  • Javier Martínez Pardo is the boss of a company that employs 15 people. Great, don't you think? Even more so when you learn that he's only 19 and is doing a further training course in the mornings and directing the business in the afternoon! Check it out here
  • There was also a news story a few days ago about parents who are looking after a sick child. I think one of the parents will be able to ask for compensation or some kind of benefit will be payable. Does anyone know anything about this?

Rafa Nadal keeps winning, that's always good news!

We've had two new women's clothing shops and an electrical goods shop open in our village high street recently, so the local economy seems to be buoyant at least.

For the mother of the sick kid. In ireland she could get a carer's allowence, not to sure in spain. It would make sense, it would be cheaper for the mother to look after than the hospital.

For the fella being a boss at 19 fair play to him, thats what economys need entreprenuer's with good ideas, if people did not take chances economys would wider away, thats what my economic teacher always said.

Tourism was up in Nerja in the summer 2010 and they are expecting another rise this year; the locals think it is because a lot of Northern Europeans are starting to shun the long haul vacations and are returning to the closer haunts.

Good news: our charity has three full-time employees. Our Kennel Manager left last month and we therefore had a vacancy. We filled this almost immediately.
The perhaps not-so-good news is that we didn't advertise since as so often seems to be the case we knew someone who would be ideal for the role and approached this person who eagerly accepted the post.
We may soon have another vacancy but as with the other post we already have someone we know lined up.
This, for me anyway, illustrates a couple of things:
firstly,as so many posters say, getting a job in Spain is all about who you know; secondly, there will always in any economy however moribund be a turnover of jobs through retirement, changing situations, pregnancy, death etc. so some lucky people will find work and lastly, what is perhaps a major part of the problem in Spain, these are not 'new' jobs.
So it's a kind of mix of good and perhaps not so good.

OK, my good news this week is that I have 3 new students! And possibly one more in February.
And my son has free entry to the zoo for the whole year! (The town hall arranged for the kids here to get a free annual pass from the 3 kings this year.) And the adults can get a 50% discounted one too. I think the zoo must have been struggling so they have taken this initiative with the help of the town hall to get more customers. And it seems to be working - apparently there have been massive queues for this pass since they announced it. (Took about an hour and a half to queue for mine!.)

Alright, I know this is supposed to be about Spain, so the mods can delete this if they wish. However, the fact that there's kids like this out there is good news:
