Hi there and welcome!

We have a 23-year-old Canadian language assistant at our local infant school, I guess doing something similar to you. She didn't know where she was going to be placed, when she applied. She wanted to be in a big city, and was quite disappointed to be placed in a little pueblo of 5,000 people.

But after her first year she grew to love it so much she came back for a second year! She has made many friends, and visited many places including Morocco.

So wherever you are placed, you'll be fine I'm sure. Keep us posted!

Me too - can't sleep for the blinds rattling! Should be better tomorrow though. Hope it's gone by Friday as I'm flying out of Gib and if it's too windy they often divert the plane to Malaga

Now there is a place, Gibralter, that has changed over the last few years. We have been there twice per year for maybe 7 years. Last visit in January of this year will also be our last one for long time. Talk about expensive, duty free what a laugh. Its cheaper to buy brandy in Mercadona. The only thing that is still cheap are fags and I am trying to give them up! It used to be great for electronics, jewellery, alcohol and fags. Sadly this no longer true. The shops seem to be owned by just a few people, mostly Asian, who then purport to compete but actually the prices are set by the owner for all his shops. I still love the place and its great for a weekend if all you want is the atmosphere. Its now cheaper, just, for us to go to Andorra if I want gadgets.

I have been to Gibralter umpteen times, but sadly I was never able to set foot ashore. I am determined to rectify this, what would be the nearest airport to Gibralter when flying from the Canary Islands?

Well Gibralter has its own airport on the border between it and Spain. The next nearest airports would be Granada or Malaga. I suggest a quick search on ' skyscanner' or similar would tell you where direct flights from the Canary Islands go to. I suspect not, unfortunately, Gibralter due to situation between it and Spain albeit they seem to be on good terms lately.
If you want a five star hotel I can recommend the Rock, faded opulance but still very good with a fascinating history. Alternatively for budget, clean accomodation right in the centre of town, the Bristol. Mygibralter.com offers a range of hotels usually with a discount, we usually book througn them.

There are no flights from Spain to Gibraltar any more - the nearest airports are Malaga or Jerez. Or you could come on the ferry to Cadiz and drive there in about 90 minutes.

I agree with Happy that it's no longer worth going there to shop, but for someone with an interest in naval and military history it's well worth a visit.

Thanks for that. My Father was there during WW2, the Spaniards blew him up! They didn't do a very good job though, thrown across the cave and landed without a scratch!!

Simple, motorcyclists and drivers use the bike lanes to get through the traffic so the 'safe' bike lanes are dangerous LOL
