I can't see how this would make a stand against racism in football unless it was seen by the general public as serving that function which it isn't and won't.
What impact did the Suarez- Evra incident have?

Football is taking a stand against racism asnd homophobia but changes in ingrained attitudes won't change overnight. The FA is or was doing a lot of work in schools but focused only on race.

Terry is imo a racist misogynistic lout...but Spanish players, no matter what club, are no angels either. They all use professional and spiteful fouls when it suits them. I note too that Spain was one of two countries whose spectators were found to have used racist abuse during the recent Europe matches, the other being Ukraine.

Racism, homophobia and misogeny (spelling?) are sadly ubiquitous in many sports, not just football.
Real Madrid has always had an ultra-right racist fan group, can't remember what they are called.

In Barcelona any racism is directed at Spaniards.

I'm rather hoping our lad won't grow up like any footballer (unless, of course, he becomes one himself and earns squillions from kicking a piece of inflated plastic, in which case all bets are off). At present he seems to be developing two interesting, if contrasting lifestyle themes - that of a top scientist and that of a cleaner.

Is he a Virgo by any chance?
They seem to be motivated by cleanliness and objective discovery.

I don't idolise any footballers, Spanish, English, Czech, whatever.
They are lucky young men who get paid megabucks for doing what they enjoy. Iniesta is no different to the rest. Like Beckham, he has good PR and has the sense to keep his private life...private.

My son had no role model, to my knowledge, but he has grown up to be a very decent adult who loves his wife and family, has a social conscience and although fairly well-off -through his own efforts - still says he thinks his hand would drop off before he put a cross against a Tory name on a ballot paper.

His equally decent wife votes Tory so they say they won't vote as they cancel each other out but both sneak out thinking the other doesn't know. I know because they tell me in confidence.

It goes to prove something, though....as I once asked the hapless Jackie Smith at a Conference, my son did not grow up to be a lesbian...where did I go wrong????

He is very different from John Terry. A family man, dedicated to his team, modest to a fault and described by all who know him as a fair and decent bloke. He is so squeaky-clean, they use him on the TV advert for zero tolerance on drug use in sport.

Who is the English equivalent I wonder?

No wonder you want him as the father of your children

Although I'm a fan of neither football nor footballers, I think David Beckham seems to be quite a nice chap.

rtve - con el dopaje tolerancia cero - andrés iniesta - YouTube
Michael Owen? It doesn't require much in the way of virtue to be different from the odious John Terry...or Ashley Cole...or Rio Ferdinand, although he has matured and does good charity work. Beckham seems a decent, straightforward kind of guy too.
There are very many very decent English footballers. I dare say there are German, French and Italian footballers who would serve as equally good role models. No doubt some South Americans too.

I haven't read anything adverse about Theo Walcott......yet.

It's similar to the 8million that they wasted prosecuting Harry Redknapps dog over unpaid tax on 185k !!
