Hi I am from England and moving to Heraklion in a week. I am from Cardiff and then Cambridge more recently. I am on FB too. Love having a laugh, shows like The Inbetweeners and Geordie Shore, drinking wine and the occasional Sambuca! Quite nervous about moving to Greece but hope I can meet some English speaking friends once I go. /SNIP/ so give me a shout if you wanna meet up in Heraklion. X

Hi I have been living in Greece for 7 years and if you want to come then you have to seriously think hard, because as you should be aware Greece is going through a tuff time and the money is getting short. Also you must have Greek friends here because the red tape is very nerve breaking and sometime damn near impossible to follow. If you dont ask the questions continually while you are here even about small issues, noone will tell you. Best of luck

Greeks are leaving Greece in droves and moving to Cyprus because there are no jobs in Greece so I very much doubt that a new business has much chance of earning enough to live on.
Having said that, there are not many jobs in Cyprus either so the influx of Greeks is going to make things worse here than they are already

Hi Jesi,

My husband got a job here (he's a medic) so we moved to Heraklion on 19th March. We have couple of Greek friends here who are known well locally so thank God for that when it comes to getting things done and showing us the ropes. But yes it is a bit of a culture shock coming from England But having said that loving it here so far esp the weather. Are you in Heraklion too? If so do you fancy meeting up for coffee? I live in Epimenidou, close to the Venetian Fort. X

Hi there,

I don't want to hijack anybody's thread, but I read your piece and that is why I signed up. For some time now I have been trying to make contact with somebody who might be able to give me the information, or point me in the right direction to get the information I need.

Sorry if I am not making myself clear, basically what I am looking to do is start a facility to enable UK people to holiday in Greece but stay with a Greek family not in a hotel. My wife and I love Greece and the people and feel frustrated at not being able to help our Greek sisters and brothers at this time of austerity and would sooner put the money for lodging in their pockets rather than into the coffers of the Hotels. Can you help?

Ed.

Hi
I think you will find it's illegal for people to have tourists staying in their house without the EOT papers from the Greek tourist association. Then they will be taxed within an inch of their lives for the pleasure! Trying to set up a business here in an absolute nightmare. There are huge costs at every corner. You need an excellent accountant and lawyer. I would suggest you put this plan on hold for the time being especially as the country is in shambles!

Hi,

And thank you for replying at least now I seem to be moving forward.

Firstly, I am not looking to set up a business and as far as the Greek government is concerned I cannot see how it can have an objection to Greek people who put up their English friends for no money.

The fact that the English people offer to return the compliment by inviting their Greek friends to stay in England is of no concern to anybody else. And of course while they are staying with their Greek friends they just might buy all the food for a couple of months and perhaps a freezer if needed to keep it fresh and maybe pay some outstanding bills.

No money would change hands. All we need is a contact living in Greece with a good network of Greek friends and we could make this happen. It could be you, why not? Put me in touch with a Greek family who could really do with a lift and my wife and I will be delighted to stay with them, we see them over here on TV, but have no way of contacting them. And when I hire a car what better way to see the real Greece than through the experienced and knowledgeable eyes of a local?

What I am proposing is a twist on the swap homes arrangement that people are doing all the time all around the world and I know they do it in Greece so where’s the problem?

People don’t need politicians and lawmakers to live, people just want to be left alone and that’s people all over the world. They will work in the Capitalists’ factories, bring up the Capitalists’ coal and make the Capitalists’ cars all so the Capitalist can make his grubby billions and all they ask in return is to live warm and comfortable with family and friends. But the Capitalist gets greedy and wants more and pretty soon we have the situation we are seeing in Greece, Italy, Ireland and watch out poor little Portugal as they are coming for you.

All I am saying is let’s help our sisters and brothers with a little help from their friends (whoops and I don’t even like the Beatles!)

I am 65 years of age with a background in the Criminal Justice System. Over the years I have read about, heard about and when as part of a task force set-up to look into corruption and the frightening behaviours of those with the power (paedophiles and body parts for sale) I along with colleagues from other departments was threatened with bodily harm if I did not step back (it led me to write a book) Well I have had enough of it. My wife and I are watching a country and a people that we love so much go to pieces and we need to do something to help.

I will source the network in the UK. Once again, will you be the Greek contact to help make this plan work? If not please don’t stand in the way of this happening show this message to somebody who will help. And what about all you other people who are reading this, haven’t you been pushed around by the system, wouldn’t you like to help people who are being bullied into non-existence? Because at the end of the day, that is what this is about, bullying!

Ed.
