Welcome to the forum. From what I have read in other posts Australia is alot more expensive than the US or UK(if you are from either of these countries) and 15,000 dollars might be ok for a temporary start in OZ unless you already have a job lined up.

Hi Jo,

I have a friend who lives Perth way and she says that work over there for brickies/carpenters etc isn't good at all at the moment (her husbands a carpenter).

The £15K you mentioned, is that money for setting up when you arrive in Australia? We budgeted for having enough money to survive without an income for 6 months - securing a job can sometimes take a l-o-n-g time.

Have you checked out the Australian forum yet? There are a few bricklayers posting on there.

Thanks dolly for your advise , we have friends that moved to perth in feb this year , and he said things are slowing down but how we see it it cant be as bad here my husband has only worked 4 days this month ! our friends in perth ( also bricklayer )would sort him out work for when we arrive.

And yes the 15 k is for taking with us and we would stay with friends till sorted .

£15K will be enough then for when you first arrive.

Which visa are you planning to apply for?

I know exactly what you mean. There's a lot for you to sort out over the coming months...lots of research, lots of work on your skills assessment. There are some really good sticky threads in the Australian forum which you may find helpful.

We sold our house in the UK just as the market started on it's downward turn....but we took a big hit on the exchange rate (it's appalling at the moment). We've losts thouands of dollars on the exchange. But, after all is said and done...it's only money
