Default New Here!

Hello All,
I am living in San Fransico, California at the moment and will be moving to London at the end of the summer to start a new job there. I am an investment banker...which means I don't have much of a life! See you guys around here!

Hello guys! thanks for the welcome ...
Michelle Alison as for the high cost of living believe me I am prepared. San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the US besides New York.
Stravinsky, since I don't know what you like doing, I'll just tell you place that I enjoy! Fishermans' Wharf on Pier 39 is always a fun place to look at and you can get a lot of great seafood for low prices . Also North Beach area is great because that is where they have Little Italy, with very quaint shops and restaraunts, and a China Town which is fun to walk through with all the crazy random shops. You should also experience the "gay culture" a little bit if you are there and go to the castro district which is a really fun colorful area and if you have children, it would not be a bad place to have them come along as well. Also Hyatt and Ashbury is a landmark in San Francisco. I hope this helps! I sound like a travel brochure Have a good one!

One of my favourite places is San Francisco, been there twice - I loved it. Would dearly love to go back at some stage. Yep, did fishermans wharf, Pier 39, Lombard Street, Alcatraz, China town, Japanese tea gardens in Golden Gate Park etc etc, then moved down the coast to LA via Yosemite. Loved Carmel and Monterey too.

Thanks both
We are taking our daughter with us whos 24. We've been to LA, San Diego, Vegas but never made it to SF. Thanks for the pointers, didn't mean to hijack your thread but its useful to hear from people on the spot.

Is the Prison worth the trip?

I doubt San Francisco can hold a candle to London in cost. The measure I use is paperback books. Pick up a book published in the US for $7.99, and the same book published in the UK will also have the numbers 7.99. But those are GBP, not USD. Yes, $16 for a normal old paperback.

But it is a great city, and I'm sure you will have a great experience. As a general rule, people usually go through stages when they undergo such a big change. The first three weeks are a honeymoon, and all is wonderful. Then, after adjusting a bit, you notice things aren't really perfect. It gets worse and worse, and the end of three months is the pits. Make no decisions at this point. Then things will gradually but imperceptibly improve, until one day at about the six month mark, you are doing something ordinary, something that used to be a problem for you, and you barely noticed. You've adjusted.

My friend compares McDonalds wherever he goes. In the UK, two years ago, it was $10 a meal. What is the price in the USA?

Petrol is $12 a gallon compared to $4 a gallon in the USA - this is also another good comparison.
