I've been reading threads on this site with fascination most of the day - particularly the one on crime in SA. My husband and I will be moving to Free State near Parys in a couple months and I am searching the web for information. We are following his childhood dreams of 1) living in Africa and 2) sheep farming full time. Selling our home of 20 years and leaving my country (USA) is somewhat terrifying, but at 55 yrs old this door has opened and it would be a shame not to explore it. I've not seen any posts about the Free State area. I'm interested in crime stats, cost of living, attitude towards foreigners, etc.

I can't give you any current information, but I did live in Welkom for two years in the early 80s. I'm told that now it is practically a ghost town. It's not too far from Parys. I think I went up there for a weekend with some friends and stayed in a park along the river.

Put some questions in the South Africa section of the forum. And remember that most of the posts about crime are about big cities. You need to ask about what it is like in smaller towns and more rural areas.
