Hi wrj,

Welcome to the forum.

What job are you looking for, and where are you looking to move to? The world is a BIG place

I moved from the UK to Australia in July 2007, and there is a load of information in the Australia country section if you are thinking about moving here.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Wrj,

I am in South America, Argentina to be exact and there are many Americans retiring here, especially in BA. For me, coming from Europe, it is very cheap, but the Americans are always complaining that Argentina is getting as expensive as the States. Not sure why they are still here, but probably the better quality of life!

My youngest brother lives your direction in New Oreleans.

Good luck with your search.

Michelle

A couple questions to ask yourself:

Why do you want to retire overseas? It can make a difference in where you should be looking.

What languages do you have? Where have you been (as a tourist) that interests you? If you don't have the local language, you've got some time to start working on it. Believe me, it makes a huge difference when living abroad to have the local language at some basic level before you get there.
Cheers,
Bev

Retirement visas do not permit you to work. If you need to work, then you should stay in the US, because other countries will only give you work visas if you are not filling a job a local can fill. Security guard would probably not fall into that category anywhere in Latin America.

Not all countries welcome retirees, either, so that is something else to check into. Most have restrictions on who can retire there and usually require some minimum income from a bona fide pension or a large sum of money deposited into a local bank. Mexico requires, I think, a pension income of $1200, and Panama requires $500 or $600.

Argentina requires approx. US$700 per month for a retirement visa.
