Hi V&G,

Welcome to the forum.

Check out the Cyprus section (if you haven't already ).

It's scary when you don't know what to do but there are loads of people on the forum happy to share their experiences.

Regards,
Karen

thanks ever so much. We've woken up this morning to blue skies and yet its cold, it still feels good. I know when we do make the move it will be for the best, i would love a house but G isnt bothered, he would live in a shack.
We've been advised to rent.. and if we dont like it we will come back or go somewhere else... as i keep saying lifes too short!

Thats good advice
If you buy you may discover you dont like the area you're in, or even that you dont like living abroad. Then its easier to return.

The best advice is to rent first.

We didn't like the area we rented in originally and now live in an area which we love.

Rent, and spend at least one full year in an area before buying. It's good to see all the seasons, winter and summer, rainy and dry, tourist and off.

We went the other way for Australia. Took several trips to visit several areas, asked the locals a lot of info, did loads of research on the internet and then bought a house. Our thinking was that being investors if we really hated it we'd let it out and move on. We had the money to do this too.

Our research paid off and the only thing we weren't prepared for was how cold the wind can be when it's coming up from the South (Antarctic).

Regards,
Karen

If you can afford to look at a house as an investment, and move on if you don't like the area, then it isn't such a risk. In the US we have a lot of people who have mortgages on their houses that are more than what they can get if they sell the house. Not just the people who got those goofy loans, but people in areas where property values have dropped 30%.

The problem, if you can't, is that you might be desperate to move, and not be able to because you are locked in. And no one makes a big move in order to be in a place they don't like. It's good to have options at first.
