Hawthorn is on a distinguished road
Question Off to New Delhi in a few weeks

Hi everyone. I am 40 something (well nearer 50 if I'm honest) married woman with grown up kids currently living in the UK. Off to New Delhi for a 3-6 month project next month. I will be the only non Indian at my place of work and have never worked abroad for more than a week before so hoping this will be a real adventure (but in a good way!)

Would really appreciate thoughts on best place to live/stay - can you get short term lets on appartments or am I condemned to live in a hotel?

My husband may come out for a month or so once I am established but will be on my own for the first month.

What are the things you wish you'd known before you arrived in Delhi?

Would love a female view on things like hairdressers, beauty salons etc too!

Thanks everyone.

Can't help you on any of your questions, but just wanted to say welcome to the forum and good luck with your trip.

You will get more responses if you post in the country forums.

Regards

Michelle

Wow, you are in for an adventure! I have very little information for you, except to say that the organization that you are working for should help you set up housing arrangements. Hotel life isn't all that bad. From what I've read, apartment life includes servants and other complicationsl. You'll probably need a driver to get you around and to and from work.

As far as things like hairdressers, the only thing I know for sure is that Indian women have hair removal done by 'threading'. The 'operator' holds a cotton thread, one end in her teeth, the other in her hand, spins it rapidly and lays it against your heavily talcum powdered (insist on this) skin. The thread pulls the hairs out by the roots, the same as waxing.
