You survive happily and well away from home, but the fact that others (including myself) need to know we can return home if familly needs it, well this is a huge part of living away from your home country for many people. I think a survival course (my husband is usless when it comes to things like this and he served in the navy) are irrelivant for this. Try needing to go home to deal with a sick parent while staying to deal with a sick inlaw while, trying to keep your children in school, and please your boss. If you love the familly you leave, you need to know you can get home easily.
Many people go to start a knew life, and forget the old one. Many of us start a new life and join it with our old one. It is just down to cercumstance, and whanting ability to get home dosent stop you being ready to leave.
Hello Ali , welcome to our forum of mixed opinions , i did not think you were insulting , merely expressing your personal thoughts which is what i enjoy on these pages . I always knew i could go home if and when reqired to do so , i went to England twice when my father was seriously ill for 3 weeks at a stretch and bucked him up no end , i felt he needed me more then than after he died .This happened both times on a Sunday , so my wife just phoned the company on Monday and told them what , why and when i would return , i was reprimanded by the boss who told me he could fire me for leaving without prior notice , i simply told him to fire away because i only had one dad and there were multiple choices of jobs . Hey , i had double shifted for a few guys when emergencies arose so what did he have to gripe about , sound independant , sorry that's my style , and yes , i did miss my family but i did not feel the need or necessity to just "óp over óme "for the weekend .
Survival to me is being able to make the choices at and where the problem arises and just get it done , whishy-washing around either agravates or complicates the issue , being a segeant put me in the drivers seat on many occassions with no time to dawdle , i guess i still carry that kind of attitude inside of me 'til the day i die , you can always clean up camp when you get home .Colin

Well the grass is always greener on the other side. Me, I'm pre retirement but not working so I couldn't afford to live there. However I live in Spain and "earn" in £ so I'm certainly better off here than I would have been in the UK

I know exactly how you feel, am the same. I would leave in the morning but my husband's line of work means there is only certain countries we could move to (broadcasting engineer). Don't worry about distance the world is a small place now and its a great feeling visiting the UK but its even better when you get on the flight out.

I met alot of Aussies when I was an expat and I have never met a nicer group of people and would love the chance to live in Australia.

Hello there, I can relate to most of what you say and that was one reason why we decided to change our lifestyle and move to Abruzzo in Italy. This is an area as yet untouched by commercialism and relatively unknown to British people with a very laid back lifestyle. We get visitors from Rome, France and other Italians who want away from the cities. It is very beautiful with the Adriatic Sea 35 mins away and likewise the skiing both of which we indulge in (my husband being an ex ski instructor). We made our move permanent one year ago and have no regrets. One word of advice though! rent first to get a feel for the area. Here there are lots of villages surrounding ours and all within 5 mins driving distance, so it pays to rent for a while and find out what suits you. Easy to get to, (Ryan Air) comes to Pescara every day from Stansted and I can organise rentals and airport pickup. Airport being 35 mins from our village. My advice is test the water first before making the leap!
