Smile New Member!!! Canada here we come!?

Hi everyone!

I have been pondering the idea to join a forum to actually speak to someone who has made the move to Canada successfully, and I finally took the plunge yesterday!

I am a customer services assistant manager for a fairtrade company and my husband works as a Warehouse Supervisor in the tool trade. He applied for a position on a course to learn Carpentry which guarantees a position working in the trade, in Canada. Checked out the company and it is all legit.

Has anyone else done this?

Also, if anyone in Canada now wants to exchange emails especially around the sasketchewan area, alberta or manitoba, that would be great!

Thanks guys 'n' gals!

Dana

Hi Dana,

Hope that you have researched, not just jobs, but the weather in the three provinces you are thinking of moving to. The Prairie provinces are vast, flat & fairly bare of vegitation. Winters are bitter & prolonged.

Not trying to put you off but I couldn't stand it for more than one year, thenl I moved to Ontario. Be prepared for culture shock wherever you go in Canada

It's a great country, but please do your research thoroughly as it is so different from England.

Good luck & I wish you well.

Jenn

Having moved from Saskatchewan to BC, and then to Mexico and back; and also having married a Brit who immigrated to Saskatchewan, I can tell you that you will find the people on the Prairies a very welcoming lot indeed. THe northern prairies are not flat, but filled with gently rolling hills and some very impressive ravines. Even the flatness (is that a word?) can be characterized by some as stunning in its simplicity. Yes, the winters are very cold and prolongued, but the summers are brilliant! And the residents of these provinces are so very warm and friendly! You are embarking on a wonderful adventure, to a place that is just beginning to boom with the influx of oil sands companies. Consequently, there's not enough housing to go around and more buildings must be constructed for the companies. You should find lots of work there.

Hello there

I am starting the ball rolling of a move to Ottawa...and don't know quite where to start! Have you got any advice on getting a visa to be able to work? My sister lives in Ottawa and my parents are alos trying to move out there. They are both retired and, I think my sister can sponsor them. However, I need to get a work visa of sorts...Any advice you have would be really appreciated as it is all a bit of a mine-field at the moment!

Are you now living in Canada?

Thanks in advance!

Anna

Hello Jen

I have just registered on this site because I am in the process of trying to move to Ottawa..and I don't know quite where to start. My sister already lives there (although she doens't yet have permanent residency). My parents are also trying to sort out the move, although they are both retired. I need to find out about the work visa, etc. Have you got any advice? How did you do it? Any advice or direction would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the expat forum, anna! Please check the Canada forum in the By Country section, and post there. I think you will get a better response there.
