From what my British friends have told me: high taxes, bad weather, bad food. Sounds like several good reasons to me, but that's just me.

Some people asked me the same about Belgium. I think it all comes down to emotions. Just like loving a person, you can fall in love with a country without a rational reason, but somehow it gets under your skin and you just want to be there. Similarly, you can dislike a country (and this can be your own country) for some reasons be it rational reasons or simply emotional ones.

For me, the grass is greener on the other side for sure. I also think the world is too beautiful to spend your entire life in one country when there's so much to discover across the borders. For me that was one of the reasons why I wanted to emigrate: a desire to wander and discover. That doesn't mean one has to hate his own country, but simple curiosity and desire to discover may be reasons enough to (temporarily or permanently) settle somewhere else.

Funny, as an American in Ireland I often look enviously at life in the UK as something more akin to life at home... that is a larger market and therefore more options, better services, and more competition. The cost of living is so high here I can't get ahead despite earning a good salary. Ireland is circling the drain with more taxes being introduced all the time to pay for our bailout including a pension grab just announced a few weeks ago to pay for a job stimulus (that's right... steal from the old to give to the young. been saving for a pension? well the government has decided it is going to take .6% of that sacrosanct savings. illegal? probably, but lets just change the laws because ireland will bend over and take it because we don't like to complain unless it's abut the weather). I acutally had a good year last year and made a €10K raise. But when all the real and stealth taxes kicked in last Jan I'm not seeing squat. Is the UK faring the recession any better?

There are several reasons why I want to leave the UK, the main one being to find work and start a new life overseas..I lost my job almost three years ago and have been searching for work ever since then, making hundreds of applications and hardly getting any feedback or interviews..I do have many good skills which I hope will find me work overseas.

We left the UK ten years ago. We wanted to go to Australia and had it all organised but, due to a family bereavment, had to cancel. We therefore went to Spain. A very similar climate to Australia, a similar 'laid back attitude to life' and a lower cost of living. Of course, under the circumstances at the time, the ease of travel to the UK was also a consideration.
We left the UK for many reasons, the high stress levels, the weather, the cost of living, the growing intolerence of the people, the growing state restrictions and interference in everyday life and, of course, simply because we wanted to try something different.
We go back for a few days most years and all the 'problems' I outlined above haven't gone away, in fact they seem in many cases far worse. I personally am glad we made the decision and wouldn't want to go back.

Have been living in Glasgow for the past 40 years. Decided to go and settle in Mauritius, the place of my birth. Bought a flat there and decided to take my car and various furnishings for my flat over there. I did 6 trips in a year to different government departments to make sure that I had all the necessary infos for duty etc. The system is so corrupt, it was impossible to get a straight answer from any government officials. They gave me a lot of false informations, it was simply unbelievable. When I got my container there, it cost me three times the value of my car to put it on the road. It would have been a lot cheaper to buy a car there. I had not expected the degree of corruption. I am back in Glasgow which i love but for the weather. It is alway dreary, wet and cold. Should go and live in Mauritius? I am not very sure. May be half year there and half year here!!! It is getting pretty dangerous to go out in the evening in Mauritius. Lots of robberies.

For me, the UK life-style turned me away. I looked at the lives people were living around me, and all I could think was why bother?.
Work every hour available, sleep the rest, and spend all year saving for the annual two-week holiday, so you can visit another country and stay in your resort, by the pool, talking to other English people. [Massive generalisation , I know, but hey, if the glove fits...].
Family is the answer I usually got. Great place to bring up kids. Really..? Most of the places that were 'half-decent' to raise kids when I was growing up now smell of piss and crack.
And half the loyal dads' you speak to, the good guys, the family men, are prbably smashing the secretary of a Friday evening, while the wife tucks the kids into bed with her third glass of red wine in one hand and four Xanax in her belly.
But what people do is up to them, none of my business. The real question is what would I be doing with my life in the UK? Why wuold I be getting up each morning? Working like a donkey my entire life to pay off a mortgage, car loans, and my iphone contract. phh! no.......thank...you......

Please, excuse the cynicism, but the question was asked. It's not all bad I guess. Some quality time with the family on every Saturday night in front of X-Factor...
