Question Oil Worker - works in Yemen, move to France?

Hello there
My name is Roy and I've only just stumbled apon this very informative website for expats and I'm looking for a little more information about moving to France from the UK especially with the tax side of things.

Here are the facts of my story:

  • My girl friend and I were born in Aberdeen and have lived in Scotland all our lives now living in Edinburgh.
  • I work in the Oil industry in Yeman (Near Saudi) and get paid from an office in Dubai to an account of my choosing - currently a UK band account.
  • I work one for six months of the year, month on, month off.
  • I currently give 40% of my wages to UK tax as I earn $130,000 USD.
  • We are looking to move to France as I am told it will be tax free for expats not earning thier money in that country.

If I live in France, have a UK Passport and get paid from Saudi to a Swiss bank account, am I liable to pay French tax???

Please advise so we can get house hunting!

Cheers
Roy

Not sure who told you that, but I think you'll find it's not nearly as simple as that. If you establish "residence" in France, you will be liable for taxes on your worldwide income as a resident.

Now, the matter of establishing residence is not terribly straightforward. If you spend 183 days a year in France, it's pretty much assumed you are resident there. But if you spend less time than that, there are plenty of other indicators they will look for - and having a girl friend living there in a house you regularly return to is considered "strong evidence" of your residence there.

Where you deposit your salary and what currency it's in have no bearing on the residence issue.
Cheers,
Bev
