Question Psychologist Counselor

Hello everybody,

I am a clinical psychologist, I am certified and everything in my country, and my husband has had some job offers in Singapore and Dubai. We didn't take a decision yet, but I was wondering how hard it would be for me to find a job there. Does anybody have any idea? Do people go to a English speaking psychologist in Singapore or Dubai?

Not particularly sure about these locations but generally as an expat it can be quite hard to find a psychologist speaking English. I had the issue several times already, was lucky to find one but it took a while. So the demand is certainly there in places crowded with expats ; to get specific info on Dubai or Singapore you may want to ask your question in the subforums for these places specifically.

I was afraid you are going to say that. I recently got my own website, so I can provide online services for a while, until I will be able to get a job in a clinic or my own practice. Online is ok but I would really love to practice face to face too.

Thanks for answering, will try the subforums.

I was only saying that because the people living in the two countries you named will know better than others if there's a local demand for this profession, and some members living in Singapore or Dubai may not check the average other parts of the forum.

I know there is a demand for English speaking psychologists because unfortunately I have had mental health issues all my life and thus need councelling. I experienced myself it can be quite hard to find an English speaking psychologist in a non-english speaking country. The few other expats I met in the same situation as me basically had the same problem.

However, Singapore is an English speaking country and Dubai is so packed with foreigners that maybe there are already English speaking psychologists there. I am not sure about that. If you'd have had plans to for example move to Poland, Hungary or Turkey, I'd say that for sure you'd have a market there because the number of well trained psychologists that speak English is low while the country does see its expat population grow. I don't dare to answer though if in cosmopolitan places like Singapore and Dubai there won't be more competitors than you expected as I can imagine English is widespread there already.

PS: much depends on your specialisation as well. A psychologist specialised in one specific disorder will always get enough customers because someone really suffering will want help from someone that really is well trained in treating the disorder he is going through.
