I am an American. I was born and raised here and have for the most part never given this way of life that much consideration one way or the other. However, I was greatly pleased to find that after living abroad in europe for a year recently that there are lots of places in the world that I would love to live and feel that I could be quite happy doing so. I lived in spain, malta, ireland, and the beautiful city of prague for about 90 days each. What i loved was that everywhere i went, I found that regular people, that is common ordinary working class folks, were pretty likable. I quickly found that I had a lot in common with other hard working folks from all over the world. We loved our kids, wanted a reasonable shot at making a nice life for our families, hoped for health and a peaceful world for those that we love. I made many great friends and am returning to spain shortly. I did notice that malta and spain in particular were very family oriented. Much more so than is commonly found here in the United States. Divorce was less common and the extended family lived very near to each other. Of course, I lived in small villages where everyone knew everyone else and kept an eye out for one other. I also loved the concept of the town plaza where the old and the young and everyone in between could gather. I suppose americans have the malls (Ha HA) but somehow that does not seem to carry the same ambiance. The long and the short of it is, I made more friends in that year, especially in the mediterranean countries than I have made in my entire life. It could have been because I wasn't working and had a lot more time to spare, it could have been the warmer climate, or could have been something as simple as my own attittude. I returned to the united states no longer feeling like a true citizen of my own country but more like a citizen of the world. It is all grand, inspiring, unusual, the same, horrible, dull and exciting at the same time. It is a planet that I am dying to continue to explore with my eyes wide open and my heart on my sleeve. I am thrilled to have had the experiences I have had and I am hungry for more.

If you want family orientated and plazas full of young, old and in between, then try Argentina.
