The website of the nearest Irish Embassy would have more information on this.

But you're right - without the local language, it will be a struggle for your husband just about anywhere. The financial stuff is more transferable than folks will have you believe - but you do need to be able to read up on the local regulations in the local language to make the transition.
Unfortunately, no. His Irish roots go back further than that.

I agree, but sometimes that is good. Home is movable. I have never regretted leaving the small steel town where I grew up. I wanted big city and adventure, and to meet someone who had never heard of my myriad aunts, uncles, and cousins. Right now, home is where my backpack is.

Default Best place to live

Attagirl,

This is my first post on this forum, but I am a member of other forums. I bought a series of books nearly 20 years ago which changed my life forever. They had mundane titles like The World's Best Tax Havens, and The Passport Report. There were eleven titles in all. There was a common theme running through these books which basically recommended that you should be thinking about five different legal jurisdictions in your life:

One where you live
One where you work or have your business
One where you keep your money
One where you have nationality
One where you have domicile

This sounds awfully complicated, but I have been working on it for nearly 20 years. The outcome is that I aspire to being able to live in any one of three countries at the same time, and we are doing that on a part time basis.

Our personal choice is the UK, Syria and Spain.

They say home is where the heart is. I was fortunate to have spent 11 years living in Syria (not everyone's choice of a place to live). I met and married my wife there, and we visit frequently. we shall probably retire there. Why? Because over the years, the friends we have made there and the welcome we receive every time we arrive is something exceptional. Despite hardship suffered by many of that country's residents, for me anyway, it's the best place in the world.

Recently, I have read a book called The Four Hour Work Week, by Timothy Ferriss. This book is a must for anyone wondering what the best place to live is. Tim has had his cake and continues to eat it. He lives wherever he wants, whenever he wants, and may never "settle down".

I have a close friend who's wife died at 48, and he bought an ocean going yacht, retired at 54 and has spent the last seven years circumnavigating the globe, recently settling part time in the French countryside, but continuing to sail around the world perpetually.

The most important aspect of living somewhere is the company you keep, and I think in the end, that dictates where most of us end up living, if we have a choice.

Get the Tim Ferriss book for a great introduction to finding out where is the best place to live, which is different for everybody

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for joining and already being so informative and helpful.

Your whole scenario gets more complicated for mobile expats doing work on the internet. For instance, for a while I (American) did some rewrite work for an Australian who was traveling in Cambodia while I was passing time in Malaysia. I was being paid via my US PayPal account.

by my saying 'there is no place like home' by that i mean home is where you make it. it doesn't have to be a particular country - just your dream! i am very patriotic about britain but i know it is not the right place to bring up my children.

We have been pleased with living in Portugal for 10 + years.
Of course, it was difficult in the beginning but as time went by we found friends, favorite spots to eat and visit.
As an American I have found the Portuguese people to be quite nice to foreigners.

Hi Gerry,

That's the second time that book has been mentioned to me in 24 hours so I will have to find it now!

I can now work anywhere I want to through the internet as part of Success University, although I don't think I've considered all the aspects that you mentioned.

Thanks for mentioning that book.

Regards,
Karen

Gerry - exactly the same experience as me.

I bought three books in around 1992. They cost me around GBP40, which was a lot of money in 1992, but they must have saved me tens of thousands over the years.

They were by Dr. W G. Hill and are known as the PT Collection, I think.

He did ramble on and on in them when the principles were very simple, but they changed my life in exactly the same way they changed yours.
