Did you sell your house when you moved or did you rent it out? We debated and finally sold. Even if later we decide we want to return to the US, we'll be looking for a better climate. It was really hard though, because it was giving up that link to the past.

That's one of the things I've decided not to do. I'm going to keep my condo and rent it out. It would be nice to have at least some of the money from the house sale, but I'm afraid I'd fritter too much of it away. I don't want to buy because I'm pretty sure I won't be in Singapore for more than a few years. If I can get there, that is.

How did you decide? I've been going back and forth on this, and I'm leaning toward renting my condo out. I'm afraid that even if I can save a lot of money working in the Middle East, I'll come back to find that prices have gone up so much that I won't be priced out of the market, or won't be able to get as nice a place.

We opted to rent our house out rather than to sell it - worse decision we've ever made. Our tenant decided to stop paying, when he finally left the place was a tip and cost a fortune to get ready for the next tenant, and now its vacant! 14 months down the line we're considering selling - its been added stress that we just dont need.

Ouch. I was renting when I left before. Now I have a small house and was thinking about renting. I've had it for a while, so rents have gone up enough to cover the mortgage, management fees, and to set aside money for repairs. I hadn't thought about it standing empty while I continued to pay on it, though. I was just thinking about how much more it would be worth if I kept it for a few more years.

Did you have a property management company or did you rent it out yourself?

I never owned a house in my life. If I did, I think I would try to just rent it out, because I wouldn't want to give up the investment.
