What do you do when you are homesick? It's a lot easier now, because you can call friends for next to nothing if you use Skype, many more things are available pretty much everywhere, and cable television is kind of universal. M

I call friends, and I look for food from home. Movies set in America seem tom make it worse. One of my favorite places to get over being homesick is Singapore. It's more rush rush than the rest of SE Asia, without being overwhelming. I go to a deli behind Raffles and get a corned beef and pastrami sandwich.

I make brownies. The smell always brings back nice memories. If the feeling hangs on, I try to find something special to do that I wouldn't be able to do in America. I take a lot of walks, and I enjoy looking at all the little differences that you notice after a while. It helps me appreciate the experience.

When homesick if I did something to “remind” me of home, it just made me more homesick. So when homesick I would often go and do something that was special and different about the place I was in. In Mexico it was going to the fruit market and try and get some fruit I have never seen before. In Damascus, I would go to the souq and wander around. This often reminded me that I should appreciate where I was.

That's probably a better approach. I do try and get out and appreciate the differences, but sometimes I want to wallow a bit. It does seem to help when I satisfy a craving for something from home. It's a lot easier than it used to be. I remember $1.00 per minute for calls to the US from Asia, no internet, and relatively few chances to satisfy a need for something familiar.

I hide. Read a book. Watch a movie. Play games on the internet. I just try to ignore it until it goes away. Or I get comfort food. Or call home. But first, I hide, sometimes before I even realize I'm homesick.

Yep I'm pretty much the same - just ride it out until it passes - which is always does

As an ex military man on active service for 6 years , i follow the old adage "Home is where your heart is " , and as the credit card reminds us "Don't leave home without it "

When I'm homesick I do not find something that reminds me of home. In fact, I do the opposite. I try to focus my mind on something else, so that I forget about home. For example, I'll go out to a local club or out with new friends from whereever I am at the time.
