Default Colombia

I am about to go on a two week vacation to Cartagena, Colombia. I am visiting a friend who has been there for three years. Everything I have been reading about Colombia is that it has made some great strides in the last two years. We shall see.

The question I have is am I miss-guided in my list and/or are there any other hot spots that should be added?

I once see this place on telly called Moirdor ( or something like that )
The place looked aweful.... and the people who lived there.....were shocking!
They didn't look like they had a job between them.
I would probably avoid this place... or Liverpool!!

I met a lot of people who had traveled in Colombia when I was in South America last year. They all liked it a lot. Cartagena was always supposed to be the safest place to visit, I think. Let us know how it goes.

Michael, don't dismiss Colombia. I just returned from Cartagena, and what a beautiful old Spanish city, with great food and friendly locals! There are many helpful and friendly tourist police in the old city also. I was traveling alone, but felt quite safe the entire time, even in the evenings.

It is a bit hot and steamy (and I live in Panamá) but the Caribbean is at the city's doorstep, and there are beautiful islands nearby.

Also, from everything I am reading about Bogotá, Cali, & Medellin, they are far safer than in the past, with a few caveats about rural areas and ground inter-city travel, especially at night.

Buenaventura is a definate NO-VISIT!

Israel is a great place to go - it's because of the security that you actually feel safe walking around and even with all the problems, it is still full of tourists

Another place to add to the list is Iran
