Default Health care abroad

I'm trying to relocate to Singapore, where I know the health care is good and not expensive, at least by US standards. What about the rest of you? Have any of you moved to countries where the health care is inadequate? Or not moved somewhere for the same reason?

We definitely rejected a couple of places because we were uncomfortable with the level of care we thought we could get. We considered Nicaragua at one point, and were thinking about one of the towns on the west coast, but decided that at our age, decent local medical care was important. When we are older we will probably want to be near or in a city with good emergency and cardiac care facilities.

I live in Lima Peru and pay for my own private health insurance. My cost is $83per month with a $5 copayment to visit the doctor.

If I pay a $10 copayment,I receive doctor visits at home! with all copayments, medicine is included.....I think its a good deal.

Many of the docters speak English and studyed in the USA or Europe.

Is the health insurance available to anyone who lives there, regardless of nationality?

Yes...a foreigner can be enrolled the Peruvian private insurance system but once you are enrolled, they require a "10 month waiting peroid".To get past this rule, just show that you have been in another health insurance policy for the past year and a half (proof of past insurance) and they should waver the 10 month rule.Remember in Peru, your passport number takes the place of their national ID card number which is used for insurance, creditcard charges etc.

I am very pleased with the medical care in Argentina. Not only do they have the latest technology, many of the doctors have trained in Europe and America. Private insurance is extremely cheap in comparison to Europe and America - saying that, it is not cheap for locals - we pay $130 a month for a family of five, which is a top plan.

There is no problem for foreigners to register with private health care schemes.

Hi Tony, I will check out the cost for a single person tomorrow. The co-payment is 10 pesos ($3) for the initial visit only. Our plan includes the dentist, orthodontist, home visits, ambulance, private room etc. My husband told the clinic about his blood clot nearly 8 years ago, and they gave him a thorough check-up.

Please acknowledge this reply, so that I will get a reminder by e-mail. Thanks

Hi Tony, the cost for a single person on the top plan is 178 pesos ($60) a month. This company is based in Mar del Plata, but covers you in all of Argentina and all bordering countries.

Medicines are available at 30% or 50% discount, depending on which pharmacy you use. They do have a website so pm me if you would like it. The other big medical company here is called OSDE, they are very expensive, but there are no co-payments. There are also many other private clinics on a smaller scale.

Hope this helps.

Saludos
Michelle

Thanks Michelle.Your plan sounds pretty good.Even though here in Peru the monthly plan is $83 which is more costly than your plan, the medicine is included with the basic copayment ($5 at the private clinic or $10 home visit).
