Have you considered Argentina? I don't know what's available in terms of retirement visas, but I've met people who lived in Buenos Aires and in Mendoza, and really liked it.

I keep coming back to Panama. Though Buenos Aires is probably worth checking out. I've never been there.

The wife and I are both from the west coast of the US and have Thailand to be where the lights came on ....We live a very good life on what a house rents for in the states and travel all over the area. We live in a good size town (Chanthaburi) with hospitals, shopping and just general walking around with-in 5min plus within 20min we are at the beach where a cottage runs about 10-15 US dollars a night. There are places in the world its just finding the right one for you

I've already checked out Thailand.

I just saw an ad here on the forum, one of the ones up at the top, for retirement in Turkey, in the south. I may add that to my list, too.

I think I may be using the retirement search to help me decide where to travel next, not just where to retire.

What part of the navy were you in?

Do you mean Lima proper, or one of the suburbs? Lima didn't impress me, but I enjoyed Miraflores.

What is the situation with visas there?

I have just returned from traveling for 9 months in europe and although I loved every minute of it, I do know that even living in spain for instance for 3 to 6 months a yearwould be somewhat unwise because the exchange rate is certainly not in our favor. I am american. Recently I read some great articles on retiring in costa rica and Panama. Panama apparetntly has a very nice pensionada program to offer. Mexico still is favorable too. i would be seeking a climate that is not humid and and would be affordable at $2400 a month income. Any strong believers in your current location want to help me get closer to a real decision?

I think you mean Central Lima, yes I agree..not too nice but the suburbs like La Molina or Old La Molina are beautiful.Miraflores is nice but I feel it has too many tourists to live in.

Well, Lima is wrapped in fog several months of the year, and Panama is very humid, so they don't sound like good ideas for you. Look into the retirement programs in Mexico, and check our Mexico forum.

$2400 per month should be a fairly substantial income in most parts of Mexico. I believe the minimum to qualify for a retirement visa is $1200 per month.
