Default US to Europe: Best & Worst Moving Companies

Hello everyone,

My name is Alex. After 18 years in the US, my mom is moving back to St. Petersburg, Russia, where we're originally from, and I'm helping her make sure that all of her belongings make it there safe and sound. Though I'll be lucky enough to inherit some of her furniture (I'm a grad student, so this should really help!), there are larger items she'd like to take with her - a coffee table, a couch, some chairs - along with the usual (clothes, books, etc). We're looking for a good moving/shipping company to transfer these items from the Midwest to St. Petersburg, preferably with insurance. Alternatively, I live in DC, so she can take a U-Haul here and ship it from somewhere on the East Coast if that's easier/better.

We're not opposed to paying well for high-quality service, but spending less is always good Thankfully, St. Petersburg is a port city and we can arrange for local movers to transfer all the items to their new home, so we probably won't need any special ground services once they get there, but if they're offered, we'll take them.

Any recommendations for best companies to use? Any companies to stay away from? All advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi Alex,

We can't 'name and shame' companies on this forum for legal reasons but people can let you know which companies are good.

When we moved from UK to Oz we got lots of quotes and decided from there. Make sure that you get quotes for the insurance as well as the moving since the insurance the moving companies offer can be quite expensive and may be able to do better elsewhere (but remember to compare like with like).

Hope your Mum's move goes smoothly,
Karen
