Default Effect of exchange rates

As Americans, we are really being affected by the falling dollar. I think when we planned our retirement, we were pretty reasonable about making sure we had an adequate cushion. However, our day-to-day buying power has really been eroded. Our pensions are in the ever-more-worthless US dollars.

Those of you who have British pounds are in good shape, but how are the rest of you faring, wherever you are?

It's one of the things that concerns me. If you are working and earning on the local economy, it isn't too bad, but while you are setting up and using money from home it can be pretty rough.

On the other hand, if you are earning money in a country with a currency that is rising against your home currencey, and save money for your return, you can really do well.

It scares me to death. It's one of the reasons Panama is high on my retirement list. At least there I only would have to worry about local inflation, not the exchange rate.

The dollar falling has had an impact on us all. My base currency is Pound Stirling, however loads of my business is done in US$ and this affects me as the price of what I sell abroad falls everytime the US$ weakens which is not good at all..... means I can have cheaper holidays in the USA though.

One of the things that hasn't been falling is the price of trans-Atlantic flights. All the seats are being grabbed up by people who go to the US to shop, keeping the demand up and reducing the need to discount.

I'm hoping to get a contract that will either shield me from the problem, make it an advantage, or pay me so much that I really won't care.
