Definitely research Belize.

I am a Canadian that has been living in the Cayman Islands and Belize for the past 19 years....

The Cayman Islands are only affordable if you are earning Cayman Islands dollars...if you are earning US dollars, then i vote for Belize.

Belize is a former British Colony and is still a British protectorate country...and part of the Commonwealth.

Belize is located south of Mexico...you can take an island hopper plane to the boarder...takes 30 minutes. Cancun and Tulum are just a short bus or taxi ride away. We head up to Mexico at least 5 times a year!

Belize is English speaking...low crime...democratic government....stable government....excellent reliable internet...constant power (no blackouts like Honduras etc)...and foreigners are welcomed.

And after living in Belize for a year, you can apply for permanent residency.
Tourists and Permanent Resident can bring in foreign income without being taxed,

Belize has the mainland and the Cayes....
The mainland is Rainforest....Mayan Ruins (we have thousands of ruins)...and picturesque farmlands in Cayo.
The Cayes are total Caribbean....Ambergris is the biggest with the most tourism...Caye Caulker is second in size and is about half the cost of Ambergris. Caye Caulker is white sand streets...bikes and golfcarts....everyone in bathing suits! I would call this a true Paradise!

Good Luck in your decision!!!
Wendy

I was chatting to someone who spends every winter there, and she said the previous year there had been none at all. There were several guest houses that offered ADSL in their rooms. I'd put both countries right back on your list.
I was looking into Chiang Mai, but Thailand seems to have strict rules on Visas. I'm self employed and work over the Internet. Is there a way to stay in Chiang Mai for an extended period without Visa problems?

Thanks.

KTectroby, Thailand does make things difficult. Your situation would depend on two things - your age (over 60?) and whether you receive social security or other guaranteed monthly income (such as a government pension). Assuming the answers to both questions are no, it would be very difficult to live long-term in Thailand. Consider Malaysia - you're close enough to go to Thailand whenever you want to, and there are no hassles there with extended stays, regardless of your age or income. Still cheap, still quick internet, better variety of food and better infrastructure - and the main language is English, which is a real plus.

At that time, you could have lived a reasonable lifestyle for $500 (not including car, but transportation is readily available or you could buy a motorcycle for $1000).

Here is an article that I wrote while in Dalat:
internationalliving dot com/countries/other_countries__1/asia/vietnam/country_archive/07_18_06 ... Big White Buddha
I also wrote several other stores that were never published plus one story that was published in the Internation Living print edition. If you contact me outside this forum, I would be happy to share as long as you agree not to post them.

As a hobby, I have been researching "Eternal Spring Living" types of locations worldwide... I have over 200 such cities in my database. There are two types of places that have "Eternal Spring" type climates, mountains in the tropics and sub-tropic beach/island locations with cold off-shore water. Dalat is an example of a tropical mountain paradise and San Diego or Sydney are examples of beach locations with near perfect weather. Again, if you contact me outside this forum, I would be happy to share as long as you agree not to post the data.

My plan is to move in a couple of years to a "Cheap location with spring-like weather and high-speed internet"... and I also make my living online. So, we have some common interests.

Ron

Correction to my earlier post - Thailand makes it difficult if you're under 50 - that's the age when you can qualify for a retirement visa. If you're 50 or older, it's relatively straightforward.

Default India Cheapest....but own problems

Being in INDIA is most materialistically cheapest and spiritually richest country. People in rural areas of India still have earning one dollar per day and spending is also so. Only the problem is country remains alert to fight islamic terrorism despite the fact India has largest muslim population and also none is " Al quada" or any other international terrorist organization ( except suspects).

Cost of living is very low in INDIA it depends on which part of country you have migrated. There are cities like Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Gurgaon , Mumbai etc where living cost is very high it is almost 30% less than standard living cost of any city of USA.

There is good climate in some part of city . however one can not predict climate stability in any country as weather of each region is changing due to global warming.

I hope this information would help people looking for a destination favourable to them.

What cities would you recommend for the cost conscious? Is it possible to get Internet service in these cities? What about visas? How hard is it to stay in India long term (maybe a year)?

I would suggest the city like pune , bangalore or chandigargh because of the weather . An earning of 1500.00 usd would be the perfact match of single person to live in one of these city. Being IT hub of the country a un- interrupted internet connection is very well available .USD150.00 is enough to give you a furnished paying guest with food and general amenities. USD 100.00 is enough to take a ayurvedic spa monthly .

I guess you don't have information on getting long term visas to India? Is it difficult?
