Spain.

The cost of living is relatively cheap, very good weather, although quality of internet is variable depending on where you are & who you go with in my opinion, you can get pretty good service though, especially if in an area with cable.

The downside is there is a lot of unemployment her now with the downturn so if you need to find work you will probally struggle.

Seems more than a little restrictive to me since I'm looking for a place to move to stay on a permanent basis, and usually that requires some work to survive.

I don't know where you got your information but it is wrong.
How do you suppose all of us expats manage to live?

I have been living in Thailand now for 7 months. I too am searching for a cheap, warm place to enjoy the rest of my life.
I think that the biggest problem finding anywhere is getting the necessary papers and permits.
In many countries you are not allowed to work, even online. I know, online work is almost anonymous but places like Thailand are closing down websites at a very fast rate. If you get caught you will be barred from entering the country again. Thailand just now is HOT, very hot. If you want to start your own business you must employ 4 Thai people for every work permit you need. You must also invest at least 2,000,000 Baht (almost 57,000 USD) The regulations to stay in Thailand are very complicated.
I lived and loved Korea for 4 years, there too the paperwork is so complicated. It is almost impossible to get a visa if you do not have a university degree and get a job as a teacher.
Cambodia is a very friendly place with wonderful people, however it is totally undeveloped and very very corrupt
Vietnam is exciting but also very corrupt and almost anyone you meet will try to rip you off, far too many dishonest people.
Malaysia has changed the laws again meaning you have to have hell of a lot of capital in the bank before you can even apply to live there and again you will not be permitted to work.
The Philippines is still on my list but the Philippines are not easy to travel around, too many islands making it difficult to find the piece of heaven you are looking for. I will be going there later this year to check it out for myself.
I repeat the biggest problem that exists is getting the needed papers to stay in a country and be able to make a living.
I am sure that many people here have different experiences. these are just my experiences. It is very hard work trying to find a suitable place. I am still searching so I will keep an eye on this thread. Maybe someone has some good ideas as how to battle the bureaucrats.

The terms for living in Malaysia can be found at this link: Terms & Conditions. To live and work in Malaysia can be found here: Working Part Time. It isn't ideal, but it's a whole lot easier than trying to live and work in Thailand and the government isn't nearly as corrupt, nor does it have the amount of political turmoil that Thailand is experiencing. Although, like Thailand, it is too hot. If you don't need to work, you can easily live in Malaysia without having a residency visa - just make a trip to a border every 90 days. You can return the same day with a fresh 90 day stamp in your passport. Since it's a small country, border runs are relatively painless.

Can a non EU (American) live in Italy longer than 3 months? Is there a long-stay or retirement visa for Italy that does not have a high financial requirement?

Just a thought...
What are the immigration issues involved with an American getting a long stay visa for India?
