Thank you, travelpro747, for a very informative post. We're planning to move to the Patzcuaro area, which so far has been spared much of the problems that so many other places in Mexico have been experiencing. Of course, safety is - and should be - a primary concern when picking a new home. If the situation continues to worsen, we will have to change our plans.

Since I'm not wealthy, I'm not much worried. I look poor, I stay in hostels, and no one would ever think that anyone would pay to get me back. I don't have a business, either.

Default Internet seemed good in Columbia

Did you look at Columbia yet? I found the internet fast and reliable.

but i need pretty fast internet (would be even better with low pings to europe...), good weather ( i'm in Poland, and it's very cold ), and low costs of living. i wouldn't mind the sea or ocean too

let's look at what i so far considered:

Thailand/Malaysia - it's not cold for sure, but internet is pretty slow and since my work depends on it, i don't know... also, i looked at telegeography, and all traffic from east-asia is going to US and then to Europe, that's really bad... it's slow i checked and there is average of 500 ms ping replies )

Vietnam/Laos - underdeveloped still. some stuff is actually more expepsinve han in europe (like internet). won't even say a word about internet speed.

Cyprus/Malta - pretty warm and close to europe. but internet costs and overall costs of living not really good.

Uruguay - so far the best bet, but internet still not quite good... and i don't know spanish but that i can learn. but then again - electronics in Uruguay is so expensive, and so cheap compared to malaysia.

any other ideas? Bali in Indonesia also quite good, but also slow internet...

more developed countries are more expesinve... but maybe i missed some small (or not so small) country that is pretty cheap but also has quite fast internet? if you have any ideas, please post them here

Interesting thread, I have the exact same needs: all three. I am surprised no one has mentioned India yet. It's a wonderful country, and many places in the southern part of the country are absolutely delightful places to live. For example, you can live in a small city like Bangalore, which is going to fulfill all 3 of the requirements--or you could choose something more beachy like Goa, where the infrastructure is also reliable. Just a thought...

I too would recommend the philippines. I have a couple friends there and their internet is just as fast as it is in europe or the us. and the weather is pretty good too. don't know about ping times to europe though. probably not bad.

I think broadband services in Penang will improve under the Wireless@Penang initiative. Penangnites can now surf the Net at 26 hotspots in Penang for free. Wireless@Penang was just launched a couple of days ago. There are also plans to improve internet services in Kuala Lumpur. All of Kuala Lumpur is expected to have broadband coverage by the end of 2009 with the installation of 3,500 WiFi zones under the KL Wireless Metropolitan project.

Default Cyprus

I was just reading up on Cyprus and while immigration seems fairly easy, I also found out that you can *never* obtain a job there. This seems a little scary to me. I mean, unless a person has a very SUBSTANTIAL amount of money I wouldn't suggest immigrating to a country where they won't allow you to work!

Seems more than a little restrictive to me since I'm looking for a place to move to stay on a permanent basis, and usually that requires some work to survive.

Cora
