Default Most vegetarian/vegan friendly countries

I have been vegetarian since I was a young child (I decided to "go veg" at age 6 - my family are non vegetarians) and have in more recent times of my life switched to being vegan.

Having lived in 6 countries now and travelled in many more, I can say being vegetarian is relatively easy anywhere in Europe but being vegan can be a bit tricky. In some countries there can be confusion on terms such as vegetarian and vegan. The interpretation of vegetarian is generally someone abstaining from any type of meat, but I have encountered vegetarians who in some places found fish on their plates. I never experienced any hassle as a vegetarian though.

Since becoming vegan, I must say it has been a bit more tricky. The concept of veganism is not well known in any country, and in some places people simply have no idea what the difference between vegetarian or vegan is. I sometimes used to ask for a vegan salad, and then found cheese on it. I learnt my lesson though that I just better explain the whole lot ("without cheese, without milk, without butter, without eggs") to avoid any confusion. Getting vegan food in itself in some places can be a challenge although so far I manage, mainly thanks to Asian cuisine which is very vegan friendly.

As I am sure many of you are more experienced with living or traveling outside of Europe, which countries or places would you describe as being vegetarian and/or vegan friendly or unfriendly? I heard for example that in some US states supermarkets have seperate sections with all vegan products gathered - such thing I never saw anywhere in Europe

As I would love to live in the Middle East again, I am lucky that many Middle Eastern dishes actually are totally vegan. Hommous, tabouleh, fried vegetable dish, several Turkish dishes...
