Beyond the big 5, looking for competence without the overhead that one of the big houses bring to the equation.

When you say "expat US taxes" - are you the expat in the US, or are you looking to expatriate yourself from the US to somewhere else?

My experience has been that there are very few tax practitioners who fully understand both sides of any expat tax situation (and I'm a CPA myself). What the big houses generally do is have their foreign affiliates deal with the "other" side of the tax situation. But few seem to work the interplay between the two tax systems.

If you are an American expat in another country, you might be able to find an American accountant who lives there or has retired there.
