It has knobs and buttons and lights and when he's experimenting with it, all I hear is squeaks and squawks.

He's got all his little songwritey friends into this new gadget, so now they've all gone out and bought one too. So we go to open mic nights and they all sit there yelling at each other "is that number 4 or 5 you're using?"

Yeah. I could use some of your Himself's beer right about then.

I didnt know guitars needed help to sound cool? Wonder wot Hendrix would have made of that.

I dont 'do' technical stuff much meself, if it has a chip in it im bound to break it so dont count on too many conversations as this pc's days must be numbered. Im into my garden which is on a rather severe slope being on the inside of a volcanic crater. Weeding has become an extreme sport requirng the use of cramp-ons and grappling hook! I love cooking so will NEVER be thin and have decided to put those calories to a good use by learning to Belly Dance before im forty (which aint long!) If it wobbles I may as well wiggle it.

What about you?

Tricia, you'll have the hang of it in no time. When I bought my Mom a computer she found every excuse under the sun for me to NOT bring it over. Then she found more excuses for me to not set it up. Then she was really awfully busy when I wanted to set her down and give her some lessons.

I ended up just showing her some games I'd installed for her, quick mouse lesson, abbreviated emergency lesson (good ol' ctrl-alt-del) and told her to call me when she was ready to really learn it.

Within a week her fear was gone and she was enjoying herself on it. Within two weeks she was having to give herself incentives to stop playing around and go do something constructive. Never thought I'd hear that from my mom, the workaholic!

Anyway, are you planning to keep in touch with family via email alone, or are you also planning to learn to use messenger software? I use Yahoo myself, but Microsoft and AOL are two other biggies, and there are lots of smaller companies offering messenger services.

It's a nice, inexpensive, way to talk live with family and friends who are far away. You don't even necessarily need to type at them anymore, since these days you can buy a headset and talk to them instead. And if you get a cam, you can show them how you look, how your kids look, what your house is like, etc.

Sorry if I'm overwhelming you. lol

Inside of a volcanic crater? Don't your 'maters roll away?

I had to do the big technical for years back in the states. I had a business that used technology, and because I'm a curious sort, I learned things that had nothing to do with my business and ended up expanding to the point where I was everyone's troubleshooter. How can I phrase how much fun it is to constantly work on computers that have a problem? Oh, I know.

BLECH!!!

Keith (Himself) is a REAL techie though. So I'm working very hard to forget everything I ever knew about fixing computers. When my laptop gives me any trouble I sit back and shriek "KEITH! 'PUTERS BROKE!" and he fixes it.

I'm planning to start learning gardening myself. We bought a house two months ago and now that we're settled, I want to grow things. So you ask me tech questions, and I'll ask you gardening questions. The Himselfs can trade gadget secrets if they want.

Ta for the offer. I try to make sure himself is using stuff when it breaks......

Nosing on the tricia chat (hello tricia) I WISH my old dear and himselfs folks would get a computer but they are so in the 'white mans magic' mindset its just too much like hard work. Anyway nagging us for photos, the latest 'wot we are doing in NZ' dvds and letters from eldest sprog to doting grandparents keeps them all busy. I like to think we are getting them to use their little grey cells before they all crumble into dust (I know learning how to fly a pc would use lots and lots) but I could do without the phone conversations saying 'I just pressed this button and it all went blank, I think it must be faulty'.

Its much more interesting having a fortnightly phone call (they still havent worked out the time difference which makes for interesting interruptions on a sunday morning) and being informed of who has died, is thinking of dying, is looking a little peaky etc etc the classic comment being 'oh have I told you, all the crematoriums are running at full tilt and there is a three week backlog'. So far I have resisted the "well thats really interesting but I have a cold tea and a warm man waiting - or should that be the other way round - so if you havent any more obituaries to read can I go now?"

I know, im cruel - we do love them really, just at a distance.
