Using a scooter in Paris

Any experiences in owning/using a scooter in Paris? I'm dead scared of the risk of accidents, how about you? And I have been told the insurance is almost as expensive as for a car, and the theft rate is high. Does your insurance cover all kinds of scooter thefts?
