Hi all,

I've been receiving quotes for moving, and I wanted to know which reputable companies you've used to relocate to France. I've read a lot about Rainier, and they seem to be very good, but their quote is higher than most. $2500 for door to door ocean freight - one lift van/approximately 200 cubic feet. I believe this is the size of 20 medium boxes, but I could be wrong. I need to start packing to visualize how much will fit for this price. I'll obviously be going for more space or throwing out a lot of stuff

Does this quote sound reasonable? Also, as a final thought, I'd like to know what you brought that you should have left behind and what you wished you took from home that you didn't bring Thanks! Gearing up for an end of December move,
~m

Hard to tell almost 20 years later about prices for moving, but I can tell you that $2500 is much less than I paid to move my household goods from California to Germany back then. A couple things to think about, though - does the quote include insurance? Normally, if you want to insure your shipment, you have to also pay to have the movers pack it. Personally, I didn't need to make a claim against my moving insurance, but I know enough people who did to feel that it is well worth the price.
Cheers,
Bev

According to our shippers a lift van holds about 150cu ft or 1000lbs, - not much at all. Leave furniture and electrical stuff, bedding (different sizes) kitchen pots & pans and so on. There is nothing we left that we have since thought we should have brought - the opposite is true. French house are tiny and have very limited storage space. If you PM me I'll tell who we used and avoid and who I would recommend.

Cheers

Not quite, if you pack it then the isurance covers total loss but not damage, if they pack it it's fully covered. We haven't fully unpacked yet so hard to tell if the insurance was worth it - its about 3% of declared value.

Cheers

NOT TRUE - ours was shipped by Ocean Freight and we paid by weight.

Typically in Europe they charge by cubic capacity, in the USA they charge by weight. This can give headaches as the US packers don't care how much space they use but if you pay storage or handling charges in Europe it can cost dearly. We had almost empty boxes shipped by lazy packers, thank heavens we didn't need to store in France

Cheers
