Default Cut off dates to apply for Masters

Hi again,

I have a short question: does anyone know if French students who've finished their Bachelor's degree (the school year ends in June, I think), can begin their Masters straight away in September of the same year?

I'm asking because after looking at a few universities, for those wanting to enrol in Masters, they want you to submit your dossier almost a year before. For example, if you wanted to start in September of 2012, you had to have applied by July/August of 2011. This would mean that the students would have to take a year off while they wait.

I don't really mind so much, but since my school year ends in October, if I wanted to do the Master's in 2013 I'd already be too late. If this is correct I'll have to apply in 2013 and begin in 2014

Not every school works the same way. You should contact the school you're interested in and see what you need to do. Most people don't need to take a year off in between if they want to do a Masters, but they do need to apply in advance, the deadlines vary enormously though.

Thanks, that explains my confusion . I had assumed that they all followed the same structure, but I did see differing dates as you said. I'll have to wait and see once I've chosen the specific course. Ta

I'm fairly sure, too, that you can apply before you have completed your diplom in progress (i.e. according to the deadlines) and you will receive an acceptance pending your successful completion of the degree. To enroll in the masters program, you have to submit your completion document (i.e. the diploma or whatever). But they do grant admission on contingency like that.
Cheers,
Bev

Thanks, that's encouraging. I'm hoping I'll not be too late because I'll need to get my Bachelors assessed for comparability - did you get that done? If I do miss the date I'll just get a job and hang around until the next round

I contacted my university and they sent me my transcript with how many ECTS (? can't remember actual name) credits it was worth, and it was more than what was necessary to be able to do the masters. If you are doing the first year of a master then basically you need to have studied for 3 years already, and for the second year of a masters, for four already

Ah, what Masters are you doing? Because for the Masters I want all the universities seem to be listing as a prerequisite a Bachelor of English. I'm doing a Bachelor of Arts (languages) with majors in French and linguistics, so I'm assuming I'll need to get my transcript translated to prove that I've done subjects similar to a BA in English.
Where are you studying by the way? Thanks

Also, I think UK degrees follow the same European system, so I may still need a 'comparability' done to show that I've done the same amount of credit points (my BA is 3 years too).

ah yes well the subject of the masters does count a little bit! Mine is in tourism and you could do it if you had a degree in one of various related things (languages, economics, geogrpahy etc). Your situation sounds a bit more complicated as its not directly related to what you are studying.

I'm studying at the unviersity where I live in Dijon. What about you? Are you in France already?

Yes I'm fairly sure the year I started at university was the first year the European credit system was directly applied to English degrees. Before that I think I would have had to have an equivalency thing done also. But I asked the CIEF (Les équivalences de diplômes - ENIC-NARIC France - CIEP) about doing an equivalency paper for me and they said it wasn't necessary/didn't exist, so you'll have to see what your university says specifically that they want.

I'm happy it went smoothly for you, I just need to take a few extra steps Yes, I'm going to send my papers to ENIC NARIC to get that done - it should be ok.

I'm with my French hubby in Melbourne at the moment, he works and I'm studying, and end 2012 we're both going back - him to start tertiary study and myself to continue. So we have to find a town were we can both study, and so far there's a few choices on the list: Clermont Ferrand, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Poitiers, Angers, Toulouse, and some others...I like Dijon but unfortunately they don't have the Masters I want
You could say I'm pretty excited, planning these things more than a year in advance
