I think in that case, you need to register first with the OFII and get the whole CAI (contrat d'accueil et d'integration) stuff dealt with. You should have had some paperwork with your visa that was supposed to be stamped (along with your visa) and then sent to the OFII to await your appointment there.

If the "last time" you were in France was more than a couple of years ago, you'll find that the process for getting yourself registered has changed significantly. But the OFII visit is the first step - before you can do much of anything.
Cheers,
Bev

Thank you, Bev, you really are a wealth of knowledge!

I have no paperwork from the Consul in the US, and with what my visa says it appears I have to start at the Prefecture ( it just says make a demande, doesn't say where, within two months for vie privee et familliale.) It was the same last time. Maybe because my children are minors, and French, it is a bit different than being married to a French citizen. Who can figure?
Merci!

I have just registered with the Pole Emploi website. It does ask you for a SS# but if you don't put one in (I don't have one) some options will appear underneath asking about the status of your number. I think one of the options is "I don't have one."

I checked the box of "applied for a carte vitale" (which I did do, still waiting) and then didn't have to furnish any more proof of it.

Not sure how it all comes into play once you apply for a job through them (something I'll be doing soon here, so I can let you know). My husband thought that I would have his social security number until I got a job and the company got one for me. This may be the case!

Anyway, long way of saying you can register on Pole Emploi without a SS#.

My husband and I just received our social security numbers (he is Italian citizen/dual US and I am US....what this took was an application form CMU de base.....on line PDF form but many documents to send in with this....plus they always want something more......check it out online and see if this can work for you too. Also the social security will want a copy of your carte de sejour before they will act. Good luck!

Hi, I know this system very well in France.

Your 'numéro de sucirité social' is the first thing to request after arriving in France. You should fill in a lot papers...........pfff

After that you should wait very long (6-8 weeks).

After that requiring your social number you can also request for your assurance. Your assurance i very low in France. Monthly €25-€70.... Almost all declarions are 100% refund.

Without this Social number you cannot do anything in France. Have Fun !

I did not see this piece of information on the forums but while I was visiting the CPAM website www.ameli.fr , I found it : it may be useful for some of you :

"You speak English and you live in France, and need information about your French Health Insurance rights, call our special Advice Line on :

0 811 36 36 46
from France (local call price from fixed-phone line)
0033 811 36 36 46
from foreign countries (call rates vary between operators)."
