Hi Sean
did you resolve this issue? I have a friend with a hemophiliac son wanting to move to Paris for 6 months and want to find out this information for them.
Thanks for anything you've found out.

Just in case Sean doesn't see this message, what is the nationality of your friend (Australian, I assume) and why is your friend moving to Paris for 6 months? Chances are that, depending on what sort of visa your friend will be getting for this move, they may be required to carry expat or travel insurance to cover them during their stay in Paris.

Travel insurance normally doesn't cover pre-existing conditions - only emergency medical care. Expat insurance may be difficult (or very exensive) to secure for the son with a condition like hemophilia.
Cheers,
Bev

Thanks for the reply Bev. Actually she is an EU citizen (and Australian) and therefore doesn't need a visa but just wants to come and "hang out" for a while and learn French etc. She may even consider moving here permanently depending on whether she can find work or not.

On an EU passport, your friend won't need a visa. Technically, the child won't, either - whether the child has EU nationality himself or can follow the process for "family member of an EU national." However, the EU nationality itself grants no health care rights in France. Your friend would need to secure an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) from the health care service of the country in which she has health insurance rights. And normally that requires having worked for some period of time there (i.e. having paid into the system). Most health insurance systems in Europe only cover those who have contributed in the recent past or those who are legal residents of the country. (For France you need to have contributed within the last year.)

Long way around to say that your friend is going to have to have travel insurance (with re-patriation coverage) to stay in France for six months. Travel insurance usually won't cover care of a chronic condition, but she should check around to see what's available and at what price.
Cheers,
Bev

Factor is abundant and freely available without any problems. Centre directors have lots of scope to make their own decisions. There are no alternatives to factor and it is available widely and you will have no problem getting in the system with a job and getting factor. French don't like prophylaxis as much but home treatment is available.

It's an old thread but the above might be useful.
