hello Miss Brodie,

This thread does not seem to be very active. Anyway, you can probably find some more informations with some of the blogs that you will find following the link : Blog Lyon, expat Lyon

Otherwise, there seems to be an active anglo-french community in Lyon : Welcome to AFGB, Lyon & Rhône. Probably a good start for you.

Cheers

I hope this topic is still active.

Any way, I will be starting my international MBA at EM Lyon (100% in English) and I am looking for practicing my english beforehand. I know few anglo saxon citizens in Lyon and therefore, I subscribed to this forum, hoping to find some partners for sharing some beers and chats accross the city.

I live in Lyon with my little familly (37, 35, 8) for 5 years now and I have a network of (French) friends which can also be a good way for expats to discover french culture and the city of Lyon. We meet up on a regular basis for meals, nights out, etc...

I also have expat experience in the UK (Rugby and Newtown!!!), Germany and Spain (Barcelona), so I know quite well how it is to land somewhere and know nobody, nor the places to go. So if some of you still need help in finding your way in Lyon and the french culture, feel free to ask.

I will be quite available until this summer and less next year, due to my intensive studies programm, so I hope plenty of people will contact me by then
I hope you've gotten some "pistes" through your message. Just wanted to let you know that I am American, living in the 6eme and am bilingual (my husband is French, but working here as an American... LONG story ). I have a few friends, mostly Franco-Something couples (Brazil, Japan, Indonesia, etc.), but all of us speak both English and French. We get together at the Cite International from time to time (not always as couples either) to watch movies in V.O., slurp back a Grimbergen or two and relax. Coversation usually starts in English but has been known to code switch, LOL! We also get together for dinners (either out or at my place as I like to cook) and sometimes cards/other board games.

Anyway, if you're still having trouble meeting Anglophones with whom you can practice your English in an "authentic" setting, send me a PM and we'll meet you at the Cite Cine for a movie or something soon.

Good Luck!

Unfortunately, this tread has not been efficient enough to enable me to practice beforehand. Anyway, I have started now and I have the occasion to speak again on a daily basis with people from all over the world! I could notice despite long time without practicing, that this is not a problem for me to follow lectures in English. I am quite busy at the moment and probably for the forthcoming months, but why not sharing a moovie at some point with your group? My wife is actually not so fluent, but we are trying to educate her!

Yeah, absolutely! If you guys ever have a free night and there's something you'd like to see, let me know and I'll set it up. We can have a beer and talk about the movie afterward! And since la plupart de mes amis parlent francais aussi que l'anglais, il y aura pas de problemes pour votre femme... comme ca, elle peut parler en anglais si elle veut, mais pas, si elle n'a pas envie. Often, just LISTENING to other people speak the foreign language is enough to teach and build confidence... then LATER you can use what you've soaked up from listening (sorry, I have a Master's in Applied Linguistics... I get all theoretical when it comes to language learning, tee hee hee).

Anyhoo, good luck and keep in touch!
