Giantpanda, thanks for the details. In fact, your point about health insurance is the most crucial information that I have yet been able to find.

3400 euros each for three of us is almost $16,000 a year--a sum we certainly could not afford, making a move to France impossible. I was under the impression that we would be spending less than half that on expat insurance acceptable to French authorities. Apparently not.

Merci beaucoup...

HI!

Better counter check yourself.

1. It is certain that you do not qualify for the French Health Insurance, if you do not work regularly in France.

2. Such insurances are basically not offered by French companies, mainly offered by affiliates of GB insurance companies ) - I do not know the details - the prices can be very variable. Some go much double than the sum quoted. And if a member has a " medical " past ( something grave, even if it were cured ) then then could refuse.

3. Certain is that basically the CMU has to check that it is " equivalent ". Since in fact the matter after a lot of " hésitations " was practically finalised in Spring 2008, nobody really knows, how locally the " check " is done !

Unfortunately for France this EC directive and its application is in fact a catastrophy for France, because in fact it means that over 10,000/year ( an estimation ) EC families will not come to settle in France in prepension. Since the EC trend is to settle in the France Profonde ( i.e. parts of France with little population, whereby the actives are moving to the larger towns ), itill contribute to the " desertification des campagnes.)*

What impact it has on the sttling of non-EC people is dificult to appreciate.

Yours,

giantpanda

* Attempts have been made to bring over that message over all possible channels but has not worked, because there would have been viable solutions, which would also have suited France.

Double the sum you quoted would be 6800 euros a person, or over 20k euro a year for a family of three. That is catastrophic--more than three times what we pay in the States.

It would seem that France is not an option.

Merci

Hi!

Just that you can make a comparison for contributions

When GB covers an English person ( on an E106, or E 121 in pension ) they pay France something like Euro 3650 per year, and if they earn more than Euro 8744 ( applies for a single person or for a couple - after basic allowances, there is a further 8% is charged a year on the difference.

A person who us gravely ill in France, costs the State in the 1st year something like Euro 21,700 to the Health insurance ( carried by the State, apart very very small participation.)

Yours,

giantpanda

Rexor, do take a look at the medical coverage offered by AARO (one of the two expat associations I told you about). While the rates are roughly what Giant Panda has quoted, they vary by the age of the insured - plus there are a couple of options for coverage.

Ideally, you would be better off if one of you got a "normal job" where the family would qualify for the national health system coverage for the three of you. That, of course, changes significantly the situation with regard to the type of visa you would be trying for. Or, if you "declare" your writing as your business (a messy proposition, but possible) and pay cotisations. (How that would affect your visa prospects, I'm not sure.)

Don't feel bad - we've had a raft of folks through here lately who want to retire to the US and then find out how expensive US health insurance is for those who don't qualify for Medicare but are over age 65. The system just isn't set up for those who don't fit into the "usual case."
Cheers,
Bev
