Possible to work as an auto-entrepreneur WHILE working as a salarié with work permit?

Hello!

I am in the process of trying to get my permis de travail through my job here in Paris. I am American, and I work as a preschool teacher in a private school. The school I work for is doing everything they can to get me this visa, as my previous visa (student visa that allowed me to work 20 hrs/ week) has expired.

If I am approved the work permit, I would like to be able to supplement my income by giving singing lessons to a group of children- something that I have already been doing for a while. I am worried that, when it comes time to renew my work permit, they will look at my bank statements and see a significant amount of income coming into my account in the form of checks for this singing group, and they will tell me that it's not allowed and will not renew my work permit. I am fully prepared to pay taxes on this income and declare myself as an autoentrepreneur, but I just want to make sure it won't be something that will stop me from having my work permit renewed.

I know that I could just ask my singing students to pay me in cash, but I'd prefer to do everything as legally as possible, and I'd actually PREFER to pay taxes, so that I may have proof of my real income should ever I need it when looking for an apartment, etc.

Does anyone have any experience at all when it comes to supplementing your income when you work in Paris on a work permit? I feel like we should be allowed to supplement our income, especially when it is self-generated and not a salaried position... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Even if the school is able to get a work permit for you, there is a good chance you may have to return to the US to apply for the visa. (They can be real sticklers about this.)

But in any event, your ability to do other work on the side may depend on just how much you're taking in from the side job. If it really is work "on the side" you may well be able to simply report it on your French income taxes as BNC non-professional. There are limits to how much you can earn this way before you have to go auto-entrepreneur or start declaring your earnings to a caisse for your cotisations.
Cheers,
Bev

I believe that if you had your own version of "auto-entrepreneur" in the US (a sole-owner company or whatever it's called), it would be completely legal for you to bill any work you did anywhere in the world (including France), as far as I understand.

A visit to an American accountant with experience in the matter should answer your questions. You would then have to see how and if you would have to declare this income in your French tax declaration, the tax treaties, etc.

No. This is not right. The French don't care what you did in the US. It's not relevant to them. What you do in France is relevant to them.

Bev is correct (as usual ;)). You can make up to a certain amount as a "hobby" before you need to register. Then if you go over the limit you also need to make sure your work contract with the school doesn't exclude outside work. Some contracts do. Usually it's limited to competing work or work that uses company resources, etc.
