Default Planning for mobile home in France?

Hi, does anyone know if I need planning permission to put a mobile home on a piece of land that I own. This is the cheapest way at the moment that I can think of, of having a holiday home, before I can one day move permanantly! I have looked at log cabins, but although the cabins themselves dont seem too expensive, the erection costs double the price. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

As far as I can see it depends on whether or not the mobile home remains easily moveable ,either under it's own power, or by normal towing;in this case , as you own the land you would need to ask the mairie , either by simple letter, or preferably by personal visit, for permission to site your mobile home.

If you were to ,for example remove the wheels of a caravan and place it on a permanent base , it will be regarded as a "light leisure building" and these are normally only permitted on authorised camping sites or other sites for which planning permission would be needed.
The best thing to do is go to your mairie and discuss it with the mayor.

As parsnips says, you should probably check with the mairie. However, it can vary a bit by area. Where we are (Ile de France - Paris region) the mairie apparently doesn't even care if you take the wheels off or mount the thing on a cement slap, as long as the structure is theoretically "demountable" they'll basically let you get away with it. (This is on "agricultural" land, which you're not supposed to build anything on.)

One neighbor has installed himself in a caravan and even put in water lines from the main road. We think he has a generator that he runs to power his television, cause we occasionally hear that running in the night.

Get to know your local mayor - it can be very helpful in situations like these.
Cheers,
Bev

Thanks for the quick replies, the land does have planning permission, so I don't know if that makes a difference. My mother who lives nearby is going to ask on my behalf, so I will mention the part about whether or not it is on wheels.

Hi!

According to the new French regulations - since 1.1.2008, this is ruled by the Communes with the general law ( i.e. the place where you want to put up your mobile home ) - the general ruling implies also a caravan that you park on your own land new to your house.

So matters can be very different, and in many cases very tough.

For mobile home, the question the Commune will ask, is how you intend to cope with waste water....
( and here there is hardly a simple solution.)

Yours,

giantpanda

It is a little more easier to get permission, if you are in the process of building on the land.
